2025 Golden Globes: Kathy Bates Rips Up Speech After Losing to ‘Shōgun's’ Anna Sawai
Mary Steenburgen isn’t hiding anything about her relationship with Ted Danson.
The Elf actress, who has been married to the Man on the Inside star since 1995, recently divulged how her view on her husband has changed since first meeting him—mostly thanks to an NSFW confession about their sex life.
“I admired him so much as an actor, but I didn’t personally know him,” Mary recalled to People at the Golden Gala red carpet Jan. 3 of their first encounter. “And I had this stupid idea that he was, like, maybe kind of a slick guy.”
However, nearly 30 years into their marriage, Mary has a better understanding of the 2025 Golden Globe nominee—who was up for Best Actor in a Television Series—Musical or Comedy alongside Jeremy Allen White, Adam Brody, Steve Martin, Martin Short and Jason Segel at the Jan. 5 ceremony. “How wrong I was,” The Book Club actress, 71, continued. “Slick guys don't say, ‘gosh-a-rooni,’ after making love. I'd like to apologize to my granddaughters.”
And while Ted may not be so suave in-between the sheets, he has certainly upheld himself in his profession. In addition to receiving his 12th Golden Globes nomination for his Netflix comedy series, the Cheers alum also received the Carol Burnett Award ahead of the 82nd Annual ceremony, an honor named after legendary comedian Carol Burnett and reserved for those who have made “outstanding contributions to television.”
Mary, naturally, also had plenty of kind words to say about her husband’s accolade, as well as their relationship, calling it “heaven on Earth.”
Of course, Ted concurred and credited his wife with his success.

“Thank you for making me laugh literally every day of our last 32 years,” the Good Place actor told his wife while accepting his honor Jan. 3. “Thank you for filling my heart with joy everyday—literally. Thank you for encouraging me to go around the next bend in the river even though I’m terrified, and you have to reassure me it’s all going to be okay. Thank you for that. I love you so much”
