Warning! The following contains potential SPOILERS for Marvel Zombies: War Zone #2–5, as per covers and solicitations.
Between The Punisher, Punisher: One Last Kill, Spectacular Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Black Cat, Spider-Man: Long Way Home, Punisher vs. The Amazing Spider-Man, and The Punisher Showdowns: Black Widow, Frank Castle’s Punisher has enjoyed a wild renaissance lately. Out of every jar he has a hand in, though, the most delectable and chocolatey cookie Punisher has tasted would happily take a bite out of him if given the chance, with an appetite for flesh that can only be satisfied in Marvel Comics’ Marvel Zombies stories.
Only one issue has been released so far, but Marvel Comics solicitations and covers have discerned a rough outline of the whole narrative. The solicitation for Marvel Zombies: War Zone #5, the final chapter of the five-issue miniseries, reads as follows:
ONLY THE WORTHY CAN SURVIVE! PUNISHER and LUKE CAGE make their final stand against GORGON and his ZOMBIE HORDE as the fate of Manhattan and the remaining survivors hangs in the balance! But when ZOMBIE THOR enters the fray, will their combined efforts be enough to turn the tides and stop the HUNGER from spreading? Find out in this ELECTRIC final showdown!!!
Will Punisher Wield Mjolnir Against A Zombified Thor?
If “ONLY THE WORTHY CAN SURVIVE” is meant to be taken literally, it seems as if Punisher will be wielding Mjolnir by the end of Marvel Zombies: War Zone, as that is probably the only way he’d hope to go toe-to-toe with a zombified Thor. Indeed, Marvel Zombies: War Zone features an intriguing twist: as a zombie, Thor is unworthy of wielding Mjolnir, and the story taking note of that so explicitly suggests that someone else will eventually be deemed worthy enough to wield it, maybe without them even believing themselves to be.
Whether or not he’d legitimately be worthy to wield the hammer in any ordinary scenario, Punisher’s worthiness in Marvel Zombies: War Zone may merely be determined by process of elimination. Logically, Punisher could outlast every other living soul who inhabits the dome, or at least be one of the last individuals alive who is considered worthy in his goal to quell the zombie apocalypse.
Punisher comes across Jack O’Lantern, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage at the end of Marvel Zombies: War Zone #1, and will later run into Elektra. That said, it can be surmised, based on the solicitation for issue #5, that Punisher and Luke are the only iconic Marvel characters who’ve survived by the end. However, because Punisher is this miniseries’ protagonist, it’d be fairly anticlimactic if Luke, let alone anyone else, picks up the hammer instead.
Punisher’s Not Locked In NYC With Zombies, They’re Locked In There With Him
Marvel Zombies: War Zone’s eponymous living corpses are dubbed the Hunger, a cabal of former Hand ninjas-turned-cannibals led by Tomi Shishido’s Gorgon. They’re instantly shown to be so formidable, so great a foe, that even S.H.I.E.L.D., the Avengers, and the Fantastic Four fled from them, while Tony Stark’s Iron Man alone was brave enough to fly to Avengers Tower and erect a dome around New York City, sealing the Hunger and everyone else who was unable to escape within.
This turns the island of Manhattan into a war zone that Punisher must trek through. But the Hunger aren’t mindless, reanimated undead—they are slaves/soldiers infected with a dark disease who do Gorgon’s bidding and bleed green blood. Plus, Gorgon is apparently not Marvel Zombies: War Zone’s main villain, and who better to assume that role in a book starring Punisher than Wilson Fisk’s Kingpin, Gorgon’s “generous benefactor”?
Marvel Zombies: War Zone #5 is scheduled to be released on January 6, 2027.

The Punisher franchise follows Frank Castle, a former Marine turned vigilante after the murder of his family. Operating outside the law, Castle wages a one-man war on crime using lethal methods and military tactics. Known for its gritty realism and moral ambiguity, the franchise spans comics, films, television series, and video games, making The Punisher one of Marvel’s most enduring antiheroes.
