Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 Official Update Isn’t What Fans Wanted

Jared is a writer, editor, and Communications Studies graduate who loves popular nerd culture (almost anything to do with Marvel, DC, Star Wars, or The Lord of the Rings) and the interactive storytelling medium. Jared's first console was the PS1, wherein he fell for Spider-Man, Spyro the Dragon, and Crash Bandicoot.

Nothing is guaranteed or inevitable in the video game industry anymore, but fans can probably feel safe in believing that Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 will follow Marvel’s Wolverine. How long it’ll be until Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 is released is another question altogether, of course, and that’s without the assumption that a Venom half-sequel game could launch in 2027. Even if the stars were to align, we’re unlikely to see Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 for quite a while.

There are plenty of reasons to look forward to Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, such as it possibly debuting Cindy Moon’s Silk, Cletus Kasady’s Carnage, and Norman Osborn’s Green Goblin. However, any game that is slated or believed to be releasing within a handful of years must bear the weight of PlayStation’s controversial and industry-defining changes, especially if it’s bound to be a game that could launch exclusively on PS6.

Unfortunately, unless it somehow managed to be released by the tail-end of 2027, there’s a low likelihood that Marvel's Spider-Man 3 will launch before PlayStation’s discless future has arrived. As such, this could well be the first Insomniac game to launch without a genuine physical release.

On Reddit, fans are lamenting how Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 won’t have a physical release if it launches any later than December 2027. Excellent_Cod6044 is understandably distraught about the fact that their collection of the Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise will be blemished: “I have the first three games on my shelf and now the series is doomed to remain incomplete forever.”

Users like youknowitslucasio are prepared to boycott PlayStation and not buy future PlayStation games if they don’t release physically with a disc. But, as TheGurpler states, “The vast majority of people have voted with their wallets, that’s why they aren’t making discs,” suggesting that overwhelming digital sales versus physical sales is why we’re in this situation to begin with.

While many PlayStation users may have already been purchasing these games digitally all along, the option to have and preserve a physical copy on a disc will always be favorable for a massive portion of the console family’s playerbase. This is no less true of Xbox or Nintendo fans, either, because physical media has had a ton of sentimental value in general.

This is a hill that many fans are willing to die on, but it’s undetermined if it’ll make much of a difference. Meanwhile, fans are probably going to have to accept that Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 won’t have a physical release, and that the PS6 will usher in a new and polarizing era for PlayStation.
