Marvel confirms Wolverine faces four new characters who intend to replace him, wielding the same powers and weapons as him. Wolverine has a lethal rogues' gallery of rivals who match his feral abilities, including his nemesis Sabretooth, who often overpowers Logan through sheer strength and ruthlessness. Romulus, the puppet master behind the Weapon X program, shares Logan's lupine mutant lineage and boasts a skeletal structure laced with carbonadium, and the cybernetic enforces Lady Deathstrike and Cyber wield adamantium enhancement to turn Logan's signature defensive advantage into their own weapon.

Wolverine’s famous catchphrase, "I’m the best there is at what I do, but what I do best isn’t very nice," is both a badge of pride and a tragic acknowledgment of his permanent entrapment in a cycle of endless violence. On one hand, it highlights Logan's survival skills and combat prowess, but on the other, it reflects the heartbreaking reality that he can't put down his claws because he's the only shield protecting the world from similar threats to him. If Wolverine ever abandons his duty, monsters like Sabretooth would probably use their near-identical gifts to slaughter the innocent with no one resilient enough to hold them accountable.

This year, Logan's gallery of foes expands with four new Wolverine copycats who threaten to hurt him and his loved ones and bring back dark memories of his time in the Weapon X program.

Marvel Is Introducing Four New Wolverine Clones

The Uncanny X-Men #38; Written By Gail Simone; Art By Juan Frigeri

The solicitation for Gail Simone and Juan Frigeri's The Uncanny X-Men #38 teases the arrival of four new Wolverine clones, described as "damaged mutants [who] have been made into cheap but brutal knockoffs" designed in the labs beneath Graymalkin Prison. The main cover for The Uncanny X-Men #39 reveals the first glimpse at these clones, each of them sporting Weapon X experimentation gear and what appear to be perfect replicas of Logan's adamantium claws. While Graymalkin Prison has been dismantled, the twisted actions behind Weapon X-Finity will continue to ripple across The Uncanny X-Men and possibly other X-Men titles.

The Uncanny X-Men #38 also teases the involvement of another new character, as Wolverine's clones are "after a new ally of the Uncanny X-Men." While the mutant exorcist Repent is a brand-new X-Men character who's helping Gambit abandon the influence of Wyvern, the solicitation likely refers to Howler, the tragic feral mutant found and rescued by Monet St. Croix. The fact that Howler looks like a frail anthropomorphic dog or feline suggests that he's a test subject who escaped the Graymalkin Prison labs, and that he's the individual Wolverine's clones are pursuing.

Wolverine's New Clones Tease A Dark Future For Logan

Wolverine Represents A Threat Just By Existing

Wolverine’s expanding lineage of genetic duplicates casts a grim shadow over Logan’s long-term legacy on Earth-616. Every new clone serves as a reminder that Logan is a biological hazard to the Marvel universe, since his mutation combines a perfect healing factor with built-in weapons, which make sinister corporations and governments view his DNA as the holy grail of warfare. No matter how many times Wolverine destroys a corrupt lab, someone else eventually salvages his genetic information to mass-produce nearly immortal assassins. So long as he breathes, Wolverine's very existence almost guarantees that evil scientists will attempt to recreate Weapon X.

Anyone who inherits Wolverine's genetic code faces a bleak future, as Logan's duplicates seem destined to suffer just like the original. Designed to be weapons from birth, Wolverine's clones tend to endure torturous upbringings and the agonizing burden of forced adamantium bonding. When individuals like X-23 inevitably break free, they face a lifetime of identity crises and endless fighting. If Earth-616's Wolverine lives long enough, he could witness the rise of entire armies of clones with uncontrollable berserker rage, and he may not be able to mentor them all like he trained Laura Kinney to not succumb to her feral impulses.
