Marvel's New Iron Man Replacement Officially Announced

Although Tony Stark's genius remains unmatched, a select group of allies and younger prodigies are strong candidates to protect Iron Man's legacy. In the comics, lifelong brother-in-arms James Rhodes has always been willing to step up as Iron Man's heroic replacement, Pepper Potts reluctantly suits up as Rescue, and Nathaniel Richards draws inspiration from Iron Man to fight as Iron Lad. Whereas Tony Stark's genius protégé Adam Ware tragically transformed into AIM's evil Advanced Iron Man, Riri Williams is the strongest candidate to become the true next Iron Man, having vowed to carry the torch following Tony Stark's brush with death in the comics and Iron Man's definitive death in the MCU.

Unfortunately, Riri Willliams rarely receives enough time to demonstrate her potential as Iron Man's true successor before Tony Stark inevitably returns to the spotlight. Fortunately, there are certain timelines where Ironheart gets to steal the show.

Ironheart Is Her World's One And Only Iron Man In The Marvel Mangaverse

Marvel's new Mangaverse initiative follows up the splash made by Marvel Mangaverse: Web of Blood #1 with the release of Marvel Mangaverse. Iron Knight #1. Riri Williams stars in this one-shot comic as the only successor to Iron Man, wielding her Ironheart technology to fight the last surviving impostors, including an Iron Man-inspired Shocker. Following Doctor Strange's sacrifice to save reality, all technology stops working, leading characters like Riri Williams to power their devices with magic in what becomes the art of Technomancy. Fueling her Ironheart armor with her own Mana, Riri Williams dedicates her life to hunting Yokai spirits in an enclosed zone.

The new Marvel Mangaverse is populated by wild new versions of a young generation of heroes, including Laura Kinney a.k.a. Weapon X-Tremis and Miles Morales aka Scarlet Spider. Meanwhile, classic figures like Doctor Strange, Peter Parker, and Tony Stark are long gone, and others like Juggernaut, Colossus, and the main three Avengers are reimagined as non-organic characters. For instance, Nick Fury's Ultimate Avengers, composed of Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man, are robots without a conscious mind of their own. Hence, Riri Williams is left without a mentor.

Tony Stark Likely Won't Overshadow Riri Williams In The Marvel Mangaverse

In the Marvel Mangaverse's post-apocalyptic fantasy reimagining of the traditional Marvel Universe, Tony Stark and his Iron Man technology are history, and Riri Williams is only able to use Stark tech by tapping into her own Mana reserves. With Iron Man, War Machine, and all other Tony Stark-related characters out of the picture, Ironheart flourishes as a self-made prodigy, and her victories and defeats will be all her own. Besides, Riri is the ultimate representation of the Mangaverse's equilibrium between humanity and machinery, having fused Mana energy with advanced old-world technology to create a makeshift alternative to regular Technomancy.

Freed from the constraints of traditional government and corporate oversight, Riri Williams' journey naturally aligns with the crusades of the apocalypse-inducing Scarlet Spider, the spell-weaving Ghostlocke, and the heavy-artillery assembly of the Arcane Avengers, all of whom would likely act under the shadow of their more experienced mentors in most other timelines of the Marvel multiverse. As the Marvel Mangaverse progresses, this new timeline may finally mark the first time Ironheart becomes the definitive successor to Iron Man, without the prospect of Tony Stark coming back to reclaim his status as the universe's main armored protector.
