The balance patch for Season 9.5 of Marvel Rivals has been revealed, but not every player is happy with the buffs and nerfs to their favorite characters. After the monumental gameplay overhaul of Season 9, which foundationally changed how Team-Ups work, changes in this update were inevitable. That being said, some have criticized this patch for overcorrecting an otherwise fun and fresh approach to the hero shooter.
Every hero now has multiple Team-Ups in Marvel Rivals they can use, whether their Team-Up character is in the group or not. Almost like a loadout players can choose, having the character of a Team-Up in your squad enhances that ability's effect. This has created a wide variety of new skills for every character in the game's still growing roster, leading to hundreds of techniques that require balancing.
Every Season 9.5 Character Buff
Small But Meaningful Tweaks To Specific Heroes
Despite the scale of the Team-Up system introduced this Season, there aren't as many balance changes for this update. However, the buffs applied in Season 9.5 have more weight than prior patches, with the numbers behind character abilities drastically changing. In some cases, a hero's skill gains new properties, giving them new tools for winning matches against enemy teams.
Since Team-Ups no longer have their own category in published nerfs and buffs, all balance changes are tied to individual characters rather than any synergy between them.
Unlike Season 9's balance adjustments, there seem to be an equal number of changes for various heroes, but characters in the Vanguard role have the most amount of changes compared to their Duelist or Strategist counterparts. Although emergency hotfixes are planned to be more frequent, this midpoint update will likely define the game's careful equilibrium until Season 10. With a new Vanguard in The Hood arriving with this update as well, it's no wonder why Vanguards are the priority.
The table below goes over all the buffs for different characters in Marvel Rivals Season 9.5, including how their new Team-Ups have changed if applicable:
|

Doctor Strange |

Although changes to newer characters like Jubilee in Marvel Rivals are welcome changes that are easier to understand, some modifications have fans scratching their heads. For example, Scarlet Witch had her entire Team-Up with Doctor Strange overhauled, creating a new relationship with Chthonian Burst and Mystic Burst abilities depending on what tier of the Team-Up she's using.
Wolverine and Moon Knight were two characters who got significant changes, with the former character perhaps "winning" the most in Season 9.5. The adamantium-clawed mutant now has more ways to hold onto his signature Berserker Rage, making them more prominent than ever before. Buffs to Phoenix and White Fox have some fans frustrated, but not nearly as many of those who disagree with the game's nerfs.
Every Season 9.5 Character Nerf
Interesting Hero Changes Reversed From What Players Desire
There are far fewer nerfs than buffs or neutral adjustments this seasonal patch, but the characters impacted are not the ones players wanted to change. Instead of targeting characters players wanted to see reduced in strength following the Team-Up overhaul in Season 9, many of the nerfs are extremely narrow and selective. As a result, many players are calling Season 9.5 a disappointing time of balance.
The tables below may give insight to this mindset, showing all the character nerfs being applied in the Season 9.5 patch:
|
Peni Parker |
Vanguard |
|
|
Venom |
Vanguard |
|
|
Black Panther |
Duelist |
|
|
Elsa Bloodstone |
Duelist |
|
|
Hela |
Duelist |
|
As you can see, these nerfs are practically non-existent, but heavily target characters like Peni Parker and Venom. Players who were hoping for other strong Strategists or Duelists to be reigned in may have to wait until next Season for any major changes. For now, Marvel Rivals Season 9.5 makes some baffling choices with character balance, but its nerfs and buffs will definitely have an impact for the foreseeable future.
