Warning: contains spoilers for The Punisher #1!

Marvel just dropped a major Punisher comeback ahead of Frank’s return in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The Punisher has been the source of controversy over the past decade, briefly leading Marvel to take him off the table. Now that the storm has seemingly passed, the Punisher has made his brutal return to the Marvel Universe.

Right as Frank Castle is renewing his war on the criminal underworld in the comics, his counterpart in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to return as well. Jon Berenthal, who brought the character to life in Daredevil as well as his own series, will reprise the role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, set to release in summer 2026.

This is only the first step in the Punisher’s grand comeback in the MCU. In addition to Brand New Day, there are rumors Frank will also appear in a Disney + special. In the comics, Marvel has given Frank a new ongoing series, in which he attempts to put his life back together, which may lead to a surprise reunion.

Can Microchip Shock the Punisher Back to Reality?

At the onset of the Punisher’s crusade, he was viewed as a villain by many in the Marvel Universe, and in fact, he was introduced as one in Amazing Spider-Man #129. While the Punisher himself became popular with fans, the other heroes of the Marvel Universe still viewed him with skepticism. However, Frank did have an ally: his quartermaster Microchip.

Unfortunately, the relationship between the Punisher and Microchip came undone, and the two had a bitter falling out, but in Marvel’s new The Punisher #1, writer Benjamin Percy and artist Jose Luis Soares begin planting the seeds for a potential reunion between the two former friends. It is far from a joyous occasion, however, as it came about out of necessity.

Punisher Microchip Reunion

In the wake of the Punisher’s return, Frank is disoriented and experiencing bouts of memory loss. He has only a vague idea of who he is, and his mission. Without the full presence of mind, the Punisher is even more dangerous than ever, and Microchip might be the only one who can shock Frank back to reality.

The Punisher's War Took Its Toll On His Friendship with Microchip

Microchip had a long history with the Punisher. Created by Mike Baron and Klaus Janson, and debuting in 1987’s The Punisher #4, Microchip was Frank’s “weapons” man, providing him with the technology necessary for his battle against crime. Allegedly inspired by James Bond’s “Q,” Microchip was invaluable to the Punisher.

The two had a spectacular falling out, largely over the Punisher’s violent tactics, which were spiraling out of control and were too much for Microchip to tolerate.

Yet the Punisher’s campaigns against the Kingpin, Jigsaw and the like took a toll on his friendship with Microchip. The two had a spectacular falling out, largely over the Punisher’s violent tactics, which were spiraling out of control and were too much for Microchip to tolerate. The two have been bitter enemies since.

In his compromised state of mind, the Punisher blames Microchip for his resurrection. Currently, Frank is holding Microchip prisoner at his headquarters. In The Punisher #1, a captive Microchip pleads for his life with Frank, citing their years of history together. At the story’s climax, Frank brings Microchip something to eat, perhaps signaling the beginning of a reconciliation.

The Punisher and Microchip’s potential reunion could not come at a better time. The murderous Jigsaw, a thorn in the Punisher’s side for many years, has returned, seeking to fill the power vacuum the Kingpin left behind. Jigsaw ensures Tombstone will not be a problem, and then sets his sights on the Punisher, the only one who can stop him.
