One such example is Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, which recently revealed Deadpool, Blade, and Loki, following the announcement of the all-villains Knights of Doom team, led by none other than Doctor Doom, of course. The game has been striking a great balance between characters who are immensely popular and indulging in choices that are far more unpredictable, like adding Carnage and not Venom for the launch roster. At San-Diego Comic-Con 2026, its boldest character yet was revealed.
Announced at SDCC 2026, as shared on the official PlayStation Blog, Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls revealed that the first post-launch Year 1 DLC character joining its roster will be Phoenix Cyclops. Amusingly, Phoenix Cyclops will be voiced by Ray Chase, who also voices Cyclops in the incredibly popular X-Men ’97 animated TV show.
Arc System Works producer Takeshi Yamanaka explains that Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls’ Cyclops “draws inspiration from his Phoenix Five incarnation from Avengers vs. X-Men.”
It’s exciting that players will get to hear more of X-Men ’97’s Cyclops, who has easily become one of the most iconic versions of the character. The choice gives this game’s Cyclops much-needed familiarity because, design-wise, he couldn’t be more different than how general audiences know him to look, which is “infused with the fiery cosmic power of the Phoenix Force.”
Now, it would seem as if Cyclops being ‘Phoenix Cyclops’ in this game implies one of two three things: either the X-Men’s Jean Grey will not be a playable character, as Cyclops has inherited her Phoenix Force power and possibly replaced her wholesale; Jean will be playable in the future, but stick to her classic telepathy and telekinesis, lacking her iconic Phoenix Force (maybe inheriting another iconic mutant’s abilities); or Jean will be playable in the future, and Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is simply doubling down on the Phoenix Force.
Likewise, with Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls obviously being unafraid to represent specific and less traditional iterations of Marvel characters, the doors are blown wide open in terms of what the rest of Year 1’s DLC will have in store. For example, it just became much more likely that we could get Eugene “Flash” Thompson’s Agent Venom instead of Eddie Brock’s Venom in Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls.
MarvelTōkon: Fighting Souls is scheduled to be released for PC and PS5 on August 6, 2026.
