Marvel has just revealed that Gambit will receive a major redesign in an upcoming appearance of the X-Men, turning the iconic hero into a literal dragon.
X-Men's Gambit Is Transforming into a Dragon
In recently released solicit information for Uncanny X-Men #28 (from Gail Simone and Luciano Vecchio), Gambit is shown with leathery wings, wielding Agamotto's Eye of Power, which crackles with eldritch energy. The issue's summary reads:
A forgotten vow from one of the team comes back to haunt them all in the most SHOCKING way imaginable, as ghastly guest stars from Marvel's past threaten to take one of our most beloved mutants into their number forever! Can the Uncanny X-Men stop their friend from being taken to WHERE MONSTERS DWELL?
This transformation has been coming for months, with Gambit gradually transforming into a monster. Now, as Marvel's most iconic mutants attempt to claim New Orleans, he's finally completing this dark rebirth.
Why X-Men's Gambit Is Turning into a Dragon
Gambit recently stole the powerful Eye of Agamotto from ancient dragon Sadurang, striking up an unlikely friendship. Sadurang has visited Gambit since, warning that the Eye will corrupt him, causing him to experience a terrible hunger that will lead to him preying on his friends. Gambit believed he could handle the corruption, and that the X-Men needed the Eye's magic to prosper.
The recent Uncanny X-Men #23 confirmed that Gambit is a lot further along than anyone realized. Not only has he been biting Rogue in his sleep, but the X-Men confront him right as he's about to devour a feral cat. Gambit begs for help, but when the X-Men try to take the Eye, he skillfully fights them off.
The fight is interrupted by Elsa Bloodstone and a group of monsters, with Bloodstone revealing the monsters want to create a new base in New Orleans by ousting its mutant inhabitants. It's possible that Bloodstone's team will give Gambit a chance to escape, or even recruit him as an ally.
Our Take on Gambit's New Look
Gambit turning into a dragon wasn't on any X-fan's Bingo card, but that's part of what is making Uncanny X-Men one of the most beloved X-books on the stands. Gambit has long been one of the franchise's most beloved heroes, and a weird, wild story like this does him justice as a thief, hero and partner to Rogue.
The X-Men's latest villain will be a fallen hero, as Gambit is overcome by magic and transforms into a cannibalistic dragon later this year.
Uncanny X-Men #28 is coming May 13 from Marvel Comics.
