In a shocking new redesign, Bucky Barnes' Winter Soldier is rocking a radical new look alongside a surprising new Avengers roster. Known for his cybernetic arm and assassin training, the former Winter Soldier is now embracing an enchanted protheses, drawing on magic to combat an apocalyptic threat.
Debuting in 1940 and killed off as part of Captain America's '60s resurgence, Bucky was rebooted in 2004 as the Winter Soldier - a brainwashed Russian asset who was kidnapped and transformed by the Soviet Union in the waning days of WWII. Thankfully, Steve Rogers broke his programming, allowing Bucky to reclaim his heroic legacy.
With an increased spotlight thanks to Sebastian Stan's MCU portrayal in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Thunderbolts, as well as some great recent comics, Bucky Barnes has become a stalwart Marvel Comics hero, with a shapeshifting arm that can become everything from a shield to a gun.
That's why it's so shocking to see him embrace magic, as Marvel unveils him as the new leader of the Arcane Avengers.
Bucky Barnes' Winter Soldier Leads the Mangaverse's Avengers
Marvel's Mangaverse is making a return, celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversary of this unique imprint and reality. In the time since fans were last in Earth-2301, a lot of things have changed. Magic has risen up to become the dominant force, eradicating advanced technology. Marvel Mangaverse: Arcane Avengers #1 is coming from Ashley Allen and Mirka Andolfo.
In a world of mystic threats, the Mangaverse Bucky Barnes is "cursed" to fight alongside a surprising roster of Arcane Avengers, wielding a wooden arm dotted with mysterious metal capsules. The Winter Soldier isn't happy with his status quo, and is looking for a way to escape the team, with the issue's summary reading:
Cursed to defeat and imprison demonic yokai alongside teammates Bloodline and Wiccan, Bucky looks for opportunity to free himself and finally be free from his captor’s control. As a new wave of yokai incursion stretches the team’s resources, Bucky plots his escape, but the sudden reappearance of his former childhood friend, Hawkeye, throws all his plans into disarray in Marvel Mangaverse: Arcane Avengers #1, on sale September 16.
The issue will also introduce Mangaverse versions of Blade's daughter Bloodline and Young Avengers Hawkeye and Wiccan. The tone is dark, with the team forced to hunt demons.
Returning to the Mangaverse is a big deal for fans of Marvel's manga imprint, especially because it's a chance for characters like Miles Morales, X-23 and Winter Soldier to be reinvented in this style, having not existed (or at least not in their current forms) during the original imprint.
Winter Soldier Resurrects the Invaders in Mainstream Avengers Comics
While Bucky is being transformed in the Mangaverse, he's also a major player in huge new series Avengers: Armageddon. With the Red Hulk attempting to take over the world and Steve Rogers hospitalized, the first issue of this comic series sees Bucky meet up with the Avengers to strike back.
However, a private moment between Bucky and Namor hammers home that while the Avengers at large are fighting as Earth's Mightiest Heroes, they're seeking to avenge Steve under the name of his WWII Invaders team, of which both were members.
Marvel recently teased that following Avengers: Armageddon, a new Avengers roster of low-powered heroes would become "Earth's Mightiest Survivors." This hints that the attack team may not survive the experience, and could spell doom for the Winter Soldier. However, the fact that he and Namor are fighting as Invaders may save them - perhaps that team will also be resurrected in Avengers: Armageddon's fallout, explaining why they're not on the upcoming team.
It's a good time to be Winter Soldier fan, as Bucky Barnes gets a long overdue Mangaverse makeover, while also starring in Marvel's most vital series of the year. With his MCU return also coming later in 2026 with Avengers: Doomsday, Winter Soldier is facing a hellish 2026... but that just means Bucky Barnes fans get more of his adventures to enjoy.
Marvel Mangaverse: Arcane Avengers #1 is coming September 16 from Marvel Comics, Avengers: Armageddon #1 is available now.
