Marvel Has Finally Given Spider-Man A New Love Interest, And They're Perfect

Marvel presents a completely new romantic interest for Spider-Man, marking the start of a new era for the wall-crawler. Spider-Man's romantic life is one more responsibility he has to juggle alongside school, work, family, friendships, and the constant demands of being a superhero. Romance is a blessing for Spider-Man, as it gives him something precious to protect and a partner who knows the person beneath the mask. At the same time, intimacy creates another vulnerability that his enemies can exploit, especially when villains learn a partner's identity and deliberately target them.

Peter Parker's romantic history begins with Liz Allan, his early high-school crush, before moving into his relationship with Betty Brant, the Daily Bugle secretary who became his first official girlfriend. At Empire State University, Peter met Gwen Stacy, and their relationship grew into his first great love before Gwen's death at the hands of the Green Goblin changed Peter's life permanently. Mary Jane Watson then developed from a friend and occasional romantic possibility into Peter's definitive partner, though Felicia Hardy has also came and went across different chapters of Peter's life.

Miles Morales' romantic history is shorter and much more closely tied to his coming-of-age story. Barbara Rodriguez was his first major girlfriend in primary continuity, and Earth-65's Gwen Stacy then arrived to develop an unexpected romantic dynamic that ended amicably after reconsidering what they wanted from the relationship. Back home, the Vulture's granddaughter, Tiana Toomes a.k.a. Starling became Miles' biggest superhero romance. However' Miles is yet to find his own Mary Jane Watson.

After "reality-hopping" across the multiverse and helping save Earth-6160 and Earth-616, Miles Morales finds himself opening a new chapter in his life in Miles Morales: Spider-Man #1. Miles realigns his priorities and continues his double life, even meeting a girl he likes by chance. Valentina Ludvenko is Miles' classmate, possibly a scientific prodigy, easy to recognize due to her striking eyes, product of Waardenburg syndrome. Valentina is honest and straightforward, and she demonstrates some interest in Miles right from the beginning.

Miles explains to Ganke that what he likes the most about his blooming relationship with Valentina Ludvenko is her lack of ties to the superhero lifestyle. Miles describes her as "just a person. Not the daughter of this costume or the alternate version of this or that Spider-Man." Unlike Tiana Toomes, with whom Miles broke up off-page before Miles Morales: Spider-Man #1, Valentina doesn't seem likely to bring more action-heavy conflict into his life, which is precisely the kind of peace he's looking for at this point.

Miles May Not Be Able To Escape Spider-Man's Usual Romantic Struggles

Miles Morales' description of Valentina Ludvenko as “just a person” may actually be the biggest warning sign of all. His desire to see her as an individual, separate from the superhero baggage, is completely understandable: Miles has spent a significant portion of his life discovering how complicated it can be to exist inside a legacy shaped by other people. Valentina initially appears to offer something refreshingly ordinary, but the problem is that Spider-Man's romantic history has a long tradition of turning apparently ordinary relationships into painful ordeals.

An even more concerning sign is that Miles Morales: Spider-Man's first arc is titled “Sins of the Father,” and it introduces a new supervillain from Jeff Morales' past who returns seeking revenge against Miles' father. Valentina could turn out to have a connection to this villain, or Marvel could eventually reveal that Miles' seemingly innocent new love interest has a much darker role in the story herself. After parting ways with the undeniably heroic Tiana Toomes due to her own superhero duties and her ties to a classic Spider-Man foe, Miles may have run into his next big threat.
