Marvel introduces a brand-new Wolverine villain with a similar healing factor but mysterious origins. Wolverine's rogues' gallery collects various X-Men villains who have their own personal grudge against him. Arkady Rossovich aka Omega Red hunts Wolverine over the mutant carbonadium synthesizer Logan stole decades ago. In Japan, Kenuichio Harada a.k.a. the Silver Samurai challenges Logan in a perpetual clash over honor, and the mutant Tomi Shishido a.k.a. Gorgon uses his lethal petrification gaze to target Wolverine as a trophy to break for the Hand ninja syndicate.
Wolverine's archnemesis is definitely Victor Creed, who represents the uninhibited monster Logan could be if he gave in to his feral instincts. Sabretooth harbors a pathological obsession to break Wolverine's spirit and famously hunts him down on every single birthday simply to remind him that he can never escape his animalistic nature. Wolverine despises Victor Creed for this sadistic cruelty and considers him a soulless butcher with no possibility of redemption, something Sabretooth constantly reinforces with his murders. Villains as savage as Green Goblin, Abomination, and Carnage have made more successful attempts at heroism than Sabretooth ever has.
As if Sabretooth weren't enough, Marvel adds a new feral character to Wolverine's mythos and sets up a complicated relationship between him and Logan.
Wolverine's New Villain Is The Mysterious Crucible
Wolverine: Paradise #2; Written And Illustrated By Dan Panosian
Dan Panosian’s Wolverine: Paradise #2 teases the reveal of the mysterious man who follows Logan and throws himself in front of him to save him from Hammerhead's barrage of bullets in issue #1. Before arriving to help Wolverine and Dazzler, the older man first crosses paths with the vacationing Wolverine at a gas station, where he attempts to remind Logan of their first meeting "a long, long time ago," only for the mutant hero to ignore him and drive away. The official solicitation for Wolverine: Paradise #2 reveals this character is called "Crucible," someone who may play a key role in Wolverine's "destiny."
Further details about Crucible are yet to be revealed, but the fact that he intercepts a shootout and regenerates as fast as Wolverine himself suggests he's somehow directly linked to Wolverine, either through a familiar link or through the Weapons Plus program. Since Crucible's moral alignment is entirely ambiguous at this point, it's entirely possible that his intervention in Wolverine and Hammerhead's impromptu battle is only a piece of a larger masterplan to toy with Logan. The official cover and solicitation for Wolverine: Paradise #3 confirms Luke Cage and Iron Fist are joining the battle, but whether Crucible has any ties to the Heroes for Hire also remains to be seen.
Wolverine: Paradise Raises A Big Question About Crucible
Crucible's Link To Wolverine Sounds Familiar
Crucible suggests a long history with Logan, and he reveals very similar powers, both of which make him suspiciously similar to Romulus, the most controversial figure in Wolverine’s entire comic history. Both Crucible and Romulus manifest as mysterious older mentors who step out of the shadows to claim an intimate connection to Wolverine’s forgotten past. Romulus became deeply divisive when he claimed to be an ancient patriarch who covertly orchestrated every major tragedy in Wolverine’s life, from the Weapon X program to the death of his wife, Itsu, while introducing a widely disliked concept that certain feral mutants actually evolved from wolves.
The aggressive retcons Romulus brought with him turned Wolverine's hardships into the calculated secret plans of a hidden puppet master, a narrative twist that rarely works in fiction. However, Crucible can avoid this problem if he serves a more contained role in Dan Panosian’s retro timeline. Set in the immediate aftermath of The Dark Phoenix Saga, Wolverine: Paradise sets up Crucible as a one-off mystery that Wolverine quickly solves during his vacation, and not as a mastermind trying to manipulate every detail of Logan's life.
