We’re only getting one Marvel movie in 2027: Avengers: Secret Wars. That’s supposed to be a big deal, an example of Marvel holding back instead of flooding the zone. I’m not sure I buy it.
Why no Marvel movie between this December’s Avengers: Doomsday and next year’s sequel? That was one of the questions put to studio head Kevin Feige after Marvel’s big panel series at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend.
“A lot of it is a strategy we’ve talked about for a while, of focusing on quality,” he told Empire. “We always try to focus on quality, but when quantity is so much, you get spread thin. We didn’t want to be spread thin, and the Avengers is as important as it comes.”
He continued, “And Secret Wars, in particular for Empire readers, who know the comics, is a setup in and of itself to the future, to what’s next. So really, it was landing those two movies and setting up 2028, of which we’ve revealed two of them so far, Ghost Rider and Panther III.”
For those counting at home, that’s four Marvel movies in three years. Would one of them coming out in-between Doomsday and Secret Wars really have been the straw that broke the Asgardian Dragon’s back? It’s hard to imagine.
In fact, fans are even speculating based on Feige’s “we’ve revealed two of them so far” that Marvel actually has a third blockbuster coming out in 2028 as part of whichever numbered phase in the MCU they’re billing this as. Maybe a Nova movie, as Feige previously teased?
I’ll be honest, it is kind of nice that there’s a 12-month breather between Doomsday and Secret Wars with no other transmedia filler that fans will have to keep track of. If only it wasn’t so short-lived.
