The final Marvel launching this week is VisionQuest, which stars Paul Bettany in the titular role opposite James Spader as Ultron. Marvel had quite the presence at New York Comic-Con last week, be it teasing the return of established shows or announcing new ones. One of the most exciting announcements came when Marvel officially confirmed the development of a new spy thriller series, Zodiac, which is set to shoot in 2027 and likely be released in 2028. No cast or creatives were announced for the show, but there’s speculation that it will be potentially connected to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. — this speculation was only fueled by Clark Gregg sharing a photo of the announcement on his personal Instagram.
During a recent interview with Collider’s Maggie Lovitt at NYCC, Marvel boss Brad Winderbaum shared some exciting new details about the series, especially for fans who love “globetrotting” spy adventures like James Bond: “We’re shooting it in London next spring, but it’s a secret. The more I say — I’ll put it to you this way. There’s a million things I want to say, but people are going to enjoy it the most if they experience it on their own.” Winderbaum did finally open up, teasing the true nature of the show, but he had to stop himself before spilling too many juicy details: “I’ll say this — it’s a globetrotting, international espionage show about secrets and lies and betrayals and secret acts of loyalty and an insane cast of characters — I have to stop talking.”
This Isn’t Marvel’s First Dance With International Espionage
Zodiac won’t be Marvel’s first time in the espionage genre, but the franchise’s record with it is more checkered than you might realize. One of Marvel's first spy thrillers came all the way back with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and it unleashed a thread that continued to be pulled through other projects like Captain America: Civil War and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. It wasn’t until Secret Invasion back in 2023 that Marvel stumbled with the spy thriller genre with one of its worst projects in franchise history. What started as a grounded spy thriller turned into something much more outlandish by the Secret Invasion finale — fans can only hope Zodiac keeps things closer to the ground.
Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of Zodiac, the new spy thriller coming to Disney+ in 2028.
