Wassup, wassup, WASSUP!
Martin spinoff series The Varnell Hill Show has dropped its first trailer, setting up the Paramount+ comedy’s first season, which premieres on Tuesday, September 1.
The Varnell Hill Show is based on the titular character that originated in Martin Lawrence‘s hit eponymous series Martin, played by Tommy Davidson. The 8-episode series blends workplace comedy with satire, cutaways and fourth-wall breaks.
The Varnell Hill Show is set behind the scenes of Varnell’s long-running late-night talk show, which finds its larger-than-life host fighting to stay relevant in an ever-changing television industry. Surrounded by network executives with big ideas, a writers’ room trying to keep up, celebrity guests and a team tasked with managing his outsized personality, Varnell remains convinced of one thing: he’s still the biggest star in the building.
In the trailer and live from Stage 69, Varnell is facing a bit of a crisis: his show is feeling dated and the ratings down. Varnell doesn’t take the news well. He tells his new assistant Rachel Perkins (Wendy Raquel Robinson) that he will burn his show to the ground before turning it into “TikTok Tonight,” he says in the video. Varnell and Rachel try to compromise, but it won’t be easy. Oh, and what is Varnell to do when Martin Payne (Lawrence) pays him a visit, seemingly to give him a hard time and make jokes about Varnell’s outfits?
To get viewers excited, Varnell stacks up the guest stars, including Ms. Pat, Deon Cole, Damon Wayans, Mike Epps and Omarion. With the possibility of a cancellation looming over their heads, can Varnell and his team get the show back to its glory days?
In addition to Davidson and Robinson, the 8-episode series also stars Kym Whitley, Nick Cafero, Emmanuel Hudson and Chris Williams.
