EXCLUSIVE: As new season 2 episodes continues to air, Luke Grimes comments on the chances of Marshals season 3.

Created by Spencer Hudnut, the Yellowstone spinoff series debuted in March on CBS, picking up the story with Grimes' Kayce Dutton as he works as a U.S. Marshal. Season 1 was a hit, and Marshals season 2 then premiered on CBS on October 4, but it remains unclear whether a season 3 will get the green light.

In an interview with ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns, Grimes addresses a prospective Marshals season 3, confirming that he doesn't have any inside info regarding the show's future. The star expresses optimism about a third season, however, given that the renewal for season 2 arrived so quickly after season 1. Check out Grimes' comment below:

We haven't heard anything yet, but this past season, the pickup was so fast, so I don't know what to expect. I think one of them aired, and they're like, "We're doing it again!" [Laughs] I feel like we just did press for season 1. So yeah, we'll see. But I'm sure you guys will all find out when we find out.

Marshals season 1 premiered on March 1, with a renewal for season 2 arriving on March 12. It has now been several weeks since season 2 premiered with no season 3 renewal, but there's reason to be confident that one will eventually arrive.

Season 1 was a viewership success, but season 2 has been even more so. The premiere episode of the sophomore season drew 8.21 million viewers, making it the number one scripted series on television for the week of October 4-10. Just looking at CBS in this time frame, the Yellowstone spinoff fell only behind 60 Minutes, which drew 10.2 million viewers.

The early response to season 2 has also been more positive. Season 1 has a lackluster 48% on Rotten Tomatoes, with an even more disappointing 28% Popcornmeter. Though season 2 doesn't yet have any scores on Rotten Tomatoes, initial reviews suggest the show has solved some of the problems from season 1.

ScreenRant's own Marshals season 2 review by Ana Dumaraog awards the season a respectable score of seven out of 10. For Dumaraog, the show has now found its footing, featuring tighter storytelling and a better use of the ensemble cast, which includes Logan Marshall-Green, Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos, Tatanka Means, Brecken Merrill, Mo Brings Plenty, Gil Birmingham, and Brett Cullen. Dumaraog writes:

Marshals season 2 feels more secure with what it wants to be — it is not desperate to cut ties with Yellowstone, but it is also no longer defined by it.

Collider's season 2 review by Michael John Petty also awards season 2 seven out of 10. Petty praises the season's renewed focus on action over soapy storytelling, as well as the decision to quickly wrap up the cliffhanger ending of the Marshals season 1 finale. For Forbes, Erik Kain gives the premiere episode of season 2 a 6.5 out of 10, calling it "cheap popcorn fare" with fun action but a need to tighten up some of the writing and character work.

It's still early days for Marshals season 2, so the lack of a season 3 renewal is not yet concerning. With such strong viewership, a green light from CBS seems very much a matter of when, not if.

New episodes of Marshals premiere on Sundays at 8 p.m. ET on CBS and Paramount+.
