There are some pretty nifty attacks in Mario & Luigi: Brothership that all have various pros and cons. These attacks will help them make it through most battles, but it might not always be enough. As the game progresses, you will want to make sure you have the Battle Plugs equipped and that you have strong combos available to you. This can take some effort, as combos will not be revealed to you until you unlock it yourself unless you have a handy-dandy list like the one below.
How To Use Battle Plugs in Mario & Luigi: Brothership
Crafting & Understanding How To Equip Them
With almost forty Battle Plugs available throughout the course of the game, it might feel difficult to narrow down which ones you want to use. This will get even harder if you are not sure which ones will make the combos you want to get even more powerful effects. However, players will have to keep a few things in mind as they get into the finer details.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership Review - The Brothers Are Back In This Light RPG
Mario & Luigi: Brothership is an incredibly fun ARPG where the brothers take center stage to use combined abilities and save the world of Concordia.
You will have a few Battle Plugs available to you from the beginning of the game, but these will not be the ones with the most powerful effects. Instead, players will want to find Lumenade, which can be acquired from Sprite Bulbs. Once you have enough, you can use the Lumenade to craft new Battle Plugs.
Battle Plugs do not have unlimited uses . Once you equip one, it will slowly lose its charge over time. Once depleted, you will have to swap it out for a different one. Your unequipped Battle Plugs will recharge over time while in storage, allowing you to use them again once they are fully charged up and ready to go.
Once you have a Battle Plug you would like to use, it can be equipped into one of the brothers’ Power Tap sockets. These are an equipment slot that can hold a Battle Plug, although this will expand over time. You will start with two sockets for Battle Plugs, but you will earn more as the game progresses. This will allow you to open up even more possibilities and have more powerful options available to you to defeat any boss in Mario & Luigi: Brothership you come across.

Devastating Effects From Powerful Combinations
Once you have a fair number of Battle Plugs and are experimenting with different options, you will stumble across something called Battle Plug combos. These are new and different effects that you can unlock by putting certain Battle Plugs together. You will not know which ones work well together until you discover them on your own. However, once unleashed these combos will be key to beating the game.
Kaboom Attack | Get an EXCELLENT rating with a Jump or Hammer attack to also damage nearby targets (with an impact wave AOE). | 10 | 30 Turns |
Surprise Iron Ball | When you get an EXCELLENT rating with a Jump or Hammer attack, an iron ball drops on the target to deal more damage. | 10 | 30 Turns |
Attack Boost | Grants you one additional Jump or Hammer attack. | 10 | 30 Turns |
There are three main Battle Plugs that are going to be the basic building blocks for any combo you make. To help you out, check out the table above to see a description and the stats of all three. You can see an example of what it looks like when a Battle Plug combo comes together in YouTuber Meme Lord's video above.
Boosted Kaboom
- Attack Boost + Kaboom Attack
This one is simple but satisfying, as it will grant you the effect of generating more impact waves if you have both of the Battle Plugs equipped. Impact waves are a type of AOE that is usually generated by the Kaboom Attack by itself. However, with the added effect, you will get to do more damage than you would have on its own. The Attack Boost will also allow the Hammer attack from Kaboom to do even more damage, granting you very efficient attack synergy from these two alone.
Surprise Iron Boost
- Attack Boost + Surprise Iron Ball
The extra hits and extra damage from Attack Boost is utilized again with this combo. You will get all of the benefits of that Battle Plug while also generating extra iron balls to fall on your enemies. Additionally, once you have more sockets if you add in a third Battle Plug that can give you extra critical hits, you will be doing even more damage than before.
Iron Ka-ball
- Kaboom Attack + Surprise Iron Ball
This is a great combo for when you are surrounded by enemies, as the AOE from the Kaboom Attack will get paired with a devastating rain of iron balls. This is because every enemy hit by the Kaboom Attack’s impact waves will also get an iron ball dropped on them. Add in an Attack Boost to this combo when you have more sockets, and you will have all of the effects from the past three combos to deal devastating damage across the board.
KaboomBOOM
- Kaboom Attack + Kaboom Attack
If you double up on these Battle Plugs, you will be able to get an impact wave that affects all enemies, not just a specific radius. This will make any other combo with Kaboom Attack more devastating as well, so you can make anything hit that much harder and to that many more enemies. You can unlock the second Kaboom Attack after you have crafted 17 Battle Plugs, so make sure to keep crafting more to be able to unlock this combo.
Bigger Ball
- Surprise Iron Ball + Surprise Iron Ball
Like the previous one, you can unlock a second Surprise Iron Ball after crafting 17 Battle Plugs. This will allow you to get double the damage from this Battle Plug. If you want to make the iron balls hit as hard as they can, particularly if paired with the Kaboom Attack as well, it might be worth it to make your attacks hit that much harder as you get into the gameplay loop of Mario & Luigi: Brotherhood.
Ka-Specialist
- Kaboom Attack + Any Specialist Plug
If you add on a Specialist Battle Plug to just the Kaboom Attack, you will target any enemies that fall under that category with extra damage. For instance, if you use the Anti-Flying Specialist Plug, you will target any flying enemies in the radius of the Kaboom Attack with even more damage. This means you will be able to hit them even harder if you add in other Plugs from previously mentioned combos. This can lead to clearing the battlefield with one hit, if you chose the right Specialist Plug for the mission.
Specialist Plugs:
- Anti-Flying Specialist
- Anti-Spike Specialist
- Anti-Army Specialist
- Anti-Zokket Specialist
- Anti-Glohm Specialist
Statusplosion
- Kaboom Attack + Any Status Ailment Plug
This combo allows you to spread any status ailment inflicted by the second Battle Plug with the impact wave of the Kaboom Attack. This means that if you inflict fiery damage, for instance, you will spread that fire to every single enemy within the impact wave. This works with any status ailment, and spreading them like crazy will help you win fast and keep enemies from hurting you in return.
Status Ailment Plugs:
- Dizzying Attack
- Fiery Attack
- Icy Attack
Dizzy Burn, Dizzy Ice, & Hot, Cold, and Dizzy
- Dizzying Attack + Status Ailment Plug
These three combos are all different versions of the same combo. Any of them will get you the Dizzy Status Ailment along with one of the other two. The last one will get you all three. Additionally, these combos will all give you more damage, but this combo is not the best for use out in the wild. Pair one of these combos with a Kaboom Attack for a much more devastating wave of attacks instead.
Broadly Specialized
- Any 2 Specialized Plugs
Likewise, using any of the two Specialist Plugs mentioned earlier together will also increase their damage. Again, the more you can combo together and deal, the stronger the damage and the effects will be.
Defensive Combos
- Auto Syrup Jar/Auto Mushroom + Deluxe Auto
Using any of the utility Battle Plugs with a Deluxe Auto will allow you to always use a recovery item when needed, but it will also pick the most efficient one in your inventory to restore the stat you need the most. This can be helpful if you have a hard time remembering to recover, but the other more offensive combos will be the most helpful in the long run as you don’t need to recover if your enemies won’t survive the first attack in Mario & Luigi: Brothership.
