Maren Morris says son Hayes, four, received death threats when she spoke out against Morgan Wallen

Maren Morris has shared the frightening response she got after speaking out against Morgan Wallen's use of a racial slur in a video obtained by TMZ in 2021.

The 34-year-old country singer said her four-year-old son Hayes, whom she shares with ex-husband Ryan Hurd, received death threats for calling out Wallen, 31, at the time.

While speaking on Sophia Bush's Work in Progress podcast, the singer described the situation as 'scary.' 

'It wasn't [just] death threats against me; it was against my son, too. So it’s like, "Oh wow, now we're involving the kids,"' she said on the episode.

'As a young mother, [the situation] was obviously scary,' she reflected on Sophia's show. 

Back in 2021, Maren called out sexism and racism within the entertainment scene. 

She emphasized that female artists were likely to be 'dropped, endorsements lost, [and become] social pariahs to music row,' if they were in Morgan's position.

'We keep [white men] rich and protected at all costs with no remorse,' she wrote on Twitter.

The star explained, 'It actually IS representative of [Nashville] because this isn’t his first "scuffle" and he just demolished a huge streaming record last month regardless,' she said of Wallen.

'We all know it wasn’t his first time using that word,' she added. 

Despite the backlash she faced for her comments, the Background Music hitmaker said she would do it again.

On the new podcast episode, she affirmed: 'I feel the exact same way as I did that day.'

However, she noted what she would do differently: 'Would I maybe use the channels of Twitter again? Probably not. There’s probably more dignified ways to get my point across but hey, it is what it is.'

She continued, 'Don’t be racist. Don’t be transphobic. Don’t be homophobic. I still stand by that so if you’re expecting me to feel bad, no I [don't]. 

'In fact, the only thing that made me feel bad is realizing even in this community of music here in Nashville — and I still live here — it's like, "Oh wow, who will go to bat for you were people of color, [but] who will go to bat for them?"'

Elsewhere in her chat with the One Tree Hill alum, Morris discussed her decision to come out as bisexual back in June.

'It was something I always knew about myself,' she revealed. 

'From age eight to now, it's really hard sometimes for me to delineate my sexual attraction or just my love of women,' she told the actress.

She was inspired to share the tidbit about herself ahead of her music collaboration with MUNA, a queer song called Push Me Over.

'I hate the confusion and I felt like I wanted to celebrate it,' she explained about how people might react to the new music had they not known her perspective.

'I just wanted to have everything out there. I think those are things that should be forward-facing for me,' she asserted. 'You do you, but for me, I was like, "My life is so open now, I’m not hiding any portion of myself."'

Explaining the casual approach she took, she stated: 'I also loved not doing a stupid press release or whatever. I was like, "I’m just going to put it in an Instagram caption, like on a tour photo." 

'I liked keeping it lighthearted because it’s not a thing for me that needs, like, an entire spiel or article.'
