Marathon continues to grow, even as Destiny 2 is on its way out. Following an official announcement of Season 2 earlier this month, the cinematic trailer is promising the extraction shooter will get even scarier this summer.
Season 2: Nightfall was always meant to be a meaner chapter for the live-service game, yet recent updates - responding to player feedback - have confirmed PvE and "PvP-lite" modes have been locked in and are coming soon, too.
The trailer itself is all about spooky vibes, which is kind-of funny considering summer (and not October) is about to start, but hey, this also feels like a natural progression for a game that's already a bit scary to play. The night has indeed fallen on Tau Ceti IV, which means enemy encounters are tenser and something darker is rising... Are those multi-limbed, reanimated Runner corpses? We might be cooked, chat.
While we're still waiting for the full list of specific additions and changes coming with the 2nd June update, players are preparing for a brutal reset and infils into far more ruthless maps: "I spit my drinkable cheeseburger watching this," one user in the trailer's comment section said. "Moon's EXTRA haunted," added another one with a well-selected meme.
Despite Marathon's total numbers not being where Sony and Bungie probably expected them to be after launch, it's abundantly clear a hardcore community is emerging around the demanding online FPS. Its future - and Bungie's - depends on attracting and retaining a casual crowd too. Therefore, expect Season 2 to be a key one as the powers that be try to determine a satisfying path forward.
