Manchester United’s new midfield trio starts together for the first time

Building the trio piece by piece

The assembly happened in stages. Santos arrived first, completing a £48 million move from Chelsea in mid-July, with a further £2 million available in add-ons. The 22-year-old Brazilian signed a deal through June 2031, suggesting United see him as a foundational piece rather than a quick fix.

Tielemans followed, joining from Aston Villa for £35 million. The Belgian midfielder made his first appearance as a substitute in a 1-1 pre-season draw against Paris Saint-Germain, getting a taste of life in red before being trusted from the start.

Fernandes, of course, needed no introduction and no transfer fee. The club captain has been the creative heartbeat of United’s midfield for years.

What the early signs suggest

The early link-up play between Fernandes and Tielemans has caught the eye of observers. Tielemans proved his ability to recycle possession quickly and find progressive passes during his time at Leicester City and then at Villa Park.

Santos, at 22, provides energy and ball-carrying ability. His time at Chelsea was marked more by loan spells than first-team minutes, but United are betting that consistent playing time and a clear role will unlock the potential that prompted Chelsea to sign him in the first place.

The performance against Leeds United, which followed the PSG draw, reportedly reinforced that optimism. The trio showed composure on the ball and an ability to retain possession under pressure.

Context matters

Santos signing until 2031 is telling. United are not renting a solution. They are investing in a player who could anchor that midfield for the next five years, growing into the role as Fernandes eventually transitions into a different phase of his career.

Tielemans, at a more mature stage, provides the immediate stability. His £35 million fee reflects a midfielder with proven Premier League experience at Leicester City and Aston Villa.
