Fede Valverde ran riot in the first leg to put Real Madrid 3-0 up and on the cusp of the Champions League quarter-finals. This is the 36th time they've gone into a European second leg three or more goals up – on all 35 previous occasions they held firm. Pep Guardiola, meanwhile, last overturned a first-leg deficit in the UCL knockouts more than a decade ago, enduring five exits under such circumstances in the intervening years.

What was lost in the magnificence of Valverde's hat-trick was that Alvaro Arbeloa fielded a weakened Real Madrid lineup. Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe were ruled out of the first leg, but could return to the fold in Manchester. It could and should have been 4-0 too, as Vinicius Junior missed a second-half penalty.

Guardiola has a track-record for overcomplicating his tactics in the latter stages of the Champions League, but this Man City team is so limited that it might not be an option this time around. Despite only joining the club in January, Antoine Semenyo is their joint-fourth top-scorer, two behind Rayan Cherki and three off Phil Foden.

They're not faring a great deal better at the back, either. Valverde made Nico O'Reilly and Marc Guehi look like schoolboys last week, but perhaps most concerning of all was just how woefully off the pace Ruben Dias was all night.
