The decklists for the Star Trek Commander decks coming to Magic: The Gathering have been officially revealed by Wizards of the Coast, giving players a better sense of what they can expect once the precons arrive and how they can be upgraded – or maybe even dismantled to build something entirely new. The release of MTG’s Star Trek Universes Beyond collaboration will happen on November 13 this year, bringing forth a whole new set of options to the card game, with unique cards and, of course, new Commander decks inspired by the heroes and villains of the sci-fi franchise.
Ahead of the official release, as is customary, Wizards of the Coast has revealed the complete decklists for all the upcoming Commander decks in this expansion, as detailed in a blog post on the official Magic: The Gathering website. Each deck will work differently, so not only are the mana combinations distinct, but the mechanics for each one too. The complete list of 100 cards for three of the four Commander decks can be checked out on the official website.
As was previously revealed, there are four Star Trek Commander decks for MTG. The first of them is called Federation Fleet, and it is spearheaded by Jean-Luc Picard, Luminary as the commander card and Captain Janeway, Endgame as the alternative commander. The next Commander deck with a complete list is called Klingon Fury, featuring Worf, Defiant Commander as the main card and Kor, Cause of Vengeance as the alternative commander card. The third deck is called We Are Borg, and it features The Borg Queen as the main commander and Locutus of Borg as the secondary option.
The decklists for all three of the aforementioned decks can be consulted right now. The Commander deck called Landing Party, which features Commander Spock as the commander card, is the only Commander deck whose decklist has not been revealed. According to Wizards of the Coast, the contents of this particular deck will be revealed “in the future.” Exactly when is still unclear, but considering the full release is just a few weeks away, it’s likely that it will happen soon, possibly connected to a special, dedicated announcement.
Federation Fleet, which features the return of Picard to Star Trek, is a Blue-Red-White (Jeskai) Commander deck that is focused on card draw through a variety of methods and enhancing creatures with counters. The Klingon Fury deck uses Red-White-Black (Mardu) mana and is a classic token-spawning ensemble that encourages attacking every turn. The White-Blue-Black (Esper) We Are Borg deck is mainly focused on enhancing Artifact creatures and creating a legion.
Based on Commander Spock’s card alone, Landing Party will be a Green-White-Blue (Bant) deck that specializes in the usage of differently named land cards to enable free casting. Mixed with a landfall element, this deck may be the strongest one yet, though the decklist remains to be seen. Even so, this new Star Trek set for Magic: The Gathering already seems promising beyond pleasing for fans of the sci-fi franchise, as it introduces new mechanics and possibilities.
