For the first time in Magic history, Star Trek will include a set of autograph cards. During the July 14 WeeklyMTG stream, Wizards teased two of the seven: Captain James T. Kirk signed by William Shatner and Captain Kathryn Janeway signed by Kate Mulgrew. Only 200 copies will be made of each card, which will be distributed through Collector Boosters.
“They're not all captains,” principal game designer Gavin Verhey said on the stream. “There are some other characters that are so iconic they had to get in on the fun too.”
Given the other five all have to be living actors, we’ll play a little guessing game of some possibilities. Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard and Michael Dorn’s Worf are both getting their own Commander decks, so they seem unlikely to be autograph cards, but that leaves plenty of other Star Trek: The Next Generation stars, including John de Lancie’s Q and Jonathan Frakes’ William T. Riker. Hopefully Deep Space Nine gets some love. There are obviously plenty of options for more recent shows like Discovery and Strange New Worlds.
No matter who the other characters and actors are, these cards are sure to become hot commodities that push up interest in Collector Boosters in a way not seen since a unique version of The One Ring in The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth.
