Miku takes the Commander stage in new Secret Lair deck

Hatsune Miku is returning to Magic: The Gathering, and this time the virtual singer is bringing an entire Commander deck with her. Designed by Carmen Klomparens, this is the first Universes Beyond Secret Lair Commander Deck, a ready-to-play Selesnya (green-white) deck focusing on life gain and tokens, and it's coming on Aug. 10.

Miku headlines the deck as Miku, Song of the People, a new treatment of Trostani, Selesnya’s Voice illustrated by KEI, the artist behind Hatsune Miku’s original software package. Mechanically, she conducts a familiar Selesnya strategy: summon an unreasonable number of creatures, gain life, and turn that growing advantage into an impressive army of followers the rest of the table can't afford to ignore.

The deck supports that plan with some of Commander’s best-known life-gain payoffs. Archangel of Thune converts each burst of healing into +1/+1 counters for the whole team, while Voice of the Blessed grows into an increasingly difficult-to-handle threat. Crested Sunmare supplies indestructible horses, Mirari’s Wake accelerates the deck while making its creatures bigger, and Aetherflux Reservoir turns all the life you gained into an impossible-to-avoid finishing move. (Archangel of Thune in particular is a great include here, and typically goes for about $60 on the resale market, assuming you don't want to Marvel reprint version.)

It is, in other words, an extremely Miku way to play Magic. Everyone is invited to the performance. The crowd keeps getting bigger. Eventually, someone gets hit by a laser. My personal favorite inclusion is Phyrexian Processor: What is an unholy Phyrexian death machine doing at a Miku concert? I don't know, but get ready to make some pretty humongous tokens.

The release includes 14 new borderless art treatments from Japanese illustrators, depicting Miku in a variety of costumes, performances, and quieter character moments. Alongside KEI, the credited artists include fan favorites 八三/Hassan and さいとうなおき/Naoki Saito. Even the basic lands contribute to the visual spectacle of the deck, with borderless plains and forests showing Miku singing beneath blue skies and surrounded by animals.

This deck will also serve as a test for a major change to the Secret Lair sales model. After the big controversy surrounding the release of the Goblin Storm Secret Lair deck, Wizards of the Coast will make some changes for this Miku drop, introducing a 24-hour limited order window. All orders placed between Aug. 10 at 9 a.m. PT and Aug. 11 at 8:59 a.m. PT will be fulfilled. A limited quantity will be available to ship right away, while additional orders placed during the window are expected to ship in May 2027 in North America and June 2027 in the EU/UK.

This policy change will apply to all products meant to be playable out of the box, including Commander decks, specialty products like the Secret Lair Dandân Deck, and other products that have the unique combination of high demand and out-of-the-box playability. "We're trying something kind of new here that harkens back to the early, early days of Secret Lair to meet demand where we think it will be highest—on fully playable products," new Secret Lair director Matthew Hodgins said in a news release. If the strategy is successful, similar Commander decks and specialty releases could eventually receive a dedicated storefront.

This is great news for Miku fans and Magic: The Gathering players in general, who could have a better chance to get their hands on some coveted Secret Lair products in the future.

Secret Lair Commander Deck: Hatsune Miku launches on Aug. 10 at 9 a.m. PT, only on MagicSecretLair.com
