Madonna was glimpsed in Venice, Italy this week making her grand return to acting after two decades away from the profession.

The 67-year-old previously carried on a busy acting career alongside her life as a pop diva, winning a Golden Globe for starring in the 1995 movie musical Evita.

Her last major acting role was a voice part in the flop 2006 animated feature Arthur and the Invisibles, helmed by French director Luc Besson.

Prior to that picture, the last live-action acting job listed on her IMDb page is the guest shot she did in a 2003 episode of the hit sitcom Will & Grace.

However she has now been glimpsed in Italy on the set of Seth Rogen's sitcom The Studio, which is currently filming its second season.

Among the stars of the series was comedy icon Catherine O'Hara, who died shockingly at the age of 71 in January after a secret battle with rectal cancer

The Material Girl was also glimpsed this week boarding a water taxi in Venice during her trip there to film the buzzy Apple TV+ series.

Draped in a long puffer coat, she was seen wearing a mysterious bandage on one of her hands as she carried her purse and Louis Vuitton hat onto the vessel.

She achieved movie stardom and pop stardom at the same time in the 1980s, playing opposite Rosanna Arquette in the beloved comedy Desperately Seeking Susan.

Arquette recalled in an interview last year that Madonna 'exploded' into worldwide fame as a singer 'as we were making' Desperately Seeking Susan in 1985.

'It was pretty intense and overwhelming for her, but she handled it great. She wasn’t a global superstar yet. She became one while we were doing that,' she said.

'She had hits, but then I remember looking at her on the cover of Rolling Stone on set and thinking: “Wow!”' Arquette recalled to the Guardian.

Her fan favorite movies include the 1990 comic book detective caper Dick Tracy, directed by and starring her boyfriend at the time Warren Beatty.

Dick Tracy featured a clutch of musical numbers by legendary Broadway songwriter Stephen Sondheim, one of which - Sooner or Later - won an Oscar and was performed by Madonna at the awards ceremony.

Her 1992 baseball movie A League of Their Own is also a classic among her admirers, directed by Penny Marshall with an all-star cast including Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Rosie O'Donnell, Jon Lovitz and Bill Pullman.

Although she netted a Golden Globe, she failed to earn an Oscar nod, though a new song for the film - You Must Love Me - did win at the Academy Awards.

Patti LuPone, who originated the lead role in Evita on Broadway, famously branded Madonna a 'movie-killer' in an interview on Watch What Happens Live.

'She's dead behind the eyes. She cannot act her way out of a paper bag. She should not be on - in film or onstage,' said the stage titan.
