What just happened? Apple released macOS 15.2 Sequoia this week, introducing a range of new AI features, including Siri's ChatGPT integration. Of particular interest to Mac enthusiasts, the updated OS contains references to two new MacBook Air models powered by the M4 SoC. Leaked regulatory documents have also hinted at the possibility of upgraded cameras for the upcoming new laptops.
Apple is anticipated to refresh the MacBook Air with the M4 chip in spring 2025 as part of its strategy to transition the entire Mac range to the latest processors. Supporting these claims, MacRumors reports that it has identified multiple strings within macOS 15.2 that appear to confirm the rumored update.
The report reveals that the latest version of macOS includes software files referencing "Mac16,12" and "Mac16,13," believed to correspond to the new M4-powered MacBook Air models. Additionally, the software mentions "MacBook Air (13-inch, M4, 2025)" and "MacBook Air (15-inch, M4, 2025)," providing further evidence for the ongoing speculation.
AppleInsider confirms the findings and adds that Apple is also likely to upgrade the front-facing camera system in its M4 MacBook Air. According to regulatory documents unearthed by the blog, the ultra-portable laptops will include a "Front Ultra Wide Camera," which could pave the way for the new MacBooks to support features like Center Stage and Desk View.
Apart from the new processor, the upcoming MacBook Air models are not expected to get too many other updates. Rumors suggest that they will retain the old design, which may disappoint some potential buyers. From the hardware standpoint, however, it will be interesting to see if the next-gen MacBook Air offers 16GB RAM and 512GB storage as the base configuration, like the M4 MacBook Pros.
The M3 MacBook Air won our recommendation for the best ultra-portable laptop for 2024, so an M4 model with faster performance and twice the amount of RAM could blow the competition out of the water. That said, this is still just speculation at this point, so we'll have to wait for more information before saying anything with certainty.
Apple launched M4-powered MacBook Pros, iMac, and Mac Mini earlier this year, leaving the MacBook Air, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro to get the M4 treatment next year. While the MacBook Air is expected to debut in spring, the other two devices will likely be announced in the usual summer window at WWDC, possibly powered by the M4 Ultra.
