UnitedHealthcare CEO Killing: Luigi Mangione Arrested, Identified as Person of Interest
Luigi Mangione's family is speaking out.
Hours after the 26-year-old was arrested and named as a person of interest in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, his family issued a statement saying they are "devastated by this news."
"Unfortunately, we cannot comment on news reports regarding Luigi Mangione," read the statement obtained by NBC News. "We only know what we have read in the media."
The family continued, "Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi's arrest. We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved."
Mangione—who police said holds two engineering degrees from the University of Pennsylvania—was taken into police custody on Dec. 9 at a McDonald's in Pennsylvania after officers received a call of a "suspicious male," according to the criminal complaint obtained by E! News.
Once on the scene, officers asked Mangione for his ID and he gave them a New Jersey identification card saying his name was Mark Rosario. When no record was found on Rosario, police "asked the male if he had been to New York recently and the male became quiet and started to shake."
"The male was advised that he was under an official police investigation and if he lied out [sic] his identity, he would get arrested," the complaint continued. "The male then stated that his name was The Defendant: Luigi Mangione."
When asked why he lied, Mangione allegedly responded, “I clearly shouldn’t have.”
The Ivy League graduate—who allegedly had a ghost gun and suppressor on him at the time—was charged with forgery, firearms not to be carried without a license, tampering with records or identification, instruments of a crime and false identification to law enforcement, per the complaint.

He was later charged in New York with one count of murder, as well as three counts of criminal possession of a weapon and one count of possession of a forged instrument, per online records viewed by NBC News.
E! News has not been able to find an attorney on record to speak on Mangione's behalf.
New York City Police Department
Following Mangione's arrest, UnitedHealthcare—whose CEO was shot and killed outside a New York hotel Dec. 4—reacted to the update in the investigation.
"Our hope is that today's apprehension brings some relief to Brian's family, friends, colleagues and the many others affected by this unspeakable tragedy," the insurance company said in a statement to NBC News. "We thank law enforcement, and we will continue to work with them on this investigation."
UnitedHealthcare added, "We ask that everyone respect the family's privacy as they mourn."
