Lou Holtz, best known as the former coach of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, died. The Holtz family confirmed the news os his death on March 4, 2026,  in various public statements, with Lou’s son Skip writing that his late father was “successful” but “significant” outside of football.

“My father passed away today, resting peacefully at home,” Skip tweeted. I appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers over the last couple months! He was successful, but more important [sic] he was Significant.”

The entire family released a statement about Lou, paying tribute to his college football coaching career as well as his ventures outside of sports.

“Louis Leo ‘Lou’ Holtz, legendary college football coach, Hall of Famer, bestselling author, and one of America’s most influential motivational voices, has passed away at the age of 89 in Orlando, Florida, surrounded by family,” the family’s statement, which the Notre Dame Fighting Irish shared on X, read. “Born January 6, 1937, in Follansbee, West Virginia, Holtz rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most respected figures in college athletics.”

The family further noted that funeral arrangements would include a Mass of Christian Burial at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at the University of Notre Dame.

Lou’s family did not immediately disclose a cause of death. However, his son Skip pointed out in his public statement that people had sent him prayers and well wishes in the months leading up to his father’s death. Lou had been placed in hospice care in January 2026.

Yes, Lou is survived by a big family. He had four children — Luanne, Lou “Skip” Junior, Kevin and Elizabeth — and they expanded the Holtz family over time with nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren for Lou.
