Loki's two seasons gave the titular god a lengthy future after Avengers: Infinity War, but the first scene that started it all remains the biggest tease for Avengers: Doomsday. The upcoming Marvel movie was originally titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, stemming from Loki's extensive setup of Kang the Conqueror as a massive threat to the MCU's Multiverse Saga. Since Loki season 2's finale, this was the case, until Jonathan Majors' court case resulted in a completely new story for the fifth Avengers film.
Given the importance that Loki's story had in setting up Kang the Conqueror's MCU reign, many assumed that the pivot to Doctor Doom as the Multiverse Saga's central villain rendered Loki pointless to the wider storyline. That said, Tom Hiddleston was confirmed as a key member of Avengers: Doomsday's cast, removing any worries that Loki's recent MCU story would be disconnected from the broader Multiverse Saga. What's more, when looking back on Loki, the show's very first scenes remain the biggest teases for Avengers: Doomsday, even though they lead into a storyline centered on Kang the Conqueror.
The opening scene of Loki was first shown in Avengers: Endgame, with the god receiving the Tesseract and escaping captivity after the Avengers' time-traveling escapades went wrong. Episode 1 of the show then featured Loki being accosted by the Time Variance Authority, where it was explained that in cases like his where beings have strayed from their expected timelines, they are removed from reality so as to not lead to the creation of the multiverse. Eventually, Loki's journey directly causes the multiverse's expansion in the MCU, establishing the status quo in the franchise today.
In Loki season 2's final scene, Loki becomes the sole protector of the multiverse he had a hand in creating. In a much broader sense than the many small teases for Kang the Conqueror, Loki was vital to the state of the entire multiverse. With Avengers: Doomsday still being a massive multiversal story starring Tom Hiddleston, it becomes clearer than ever that, despite initially teasing Kang's emergence, Loki's first-ever scenes in 2021 are more important to Avengers: Doomsday than anything else in the MCU.
Disney+'s Loki Accidentally Set Up Doctor Doom
Credit: MovieStillsDBTo build on all of this, Loki accidentally set up Doctor Doom. Again, the show was intended as a way to introduce MCU viewers to Kang the Conqueror before he became the primary villain of movies like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, and Avengers: Secret Wars. While the show can never remove this 12-episode setup of Kang, it can still be used as a way to explain how and why Doctor Doom is now the villain of Avengers: Doomsday and the reworked Avengers: Secret Wars.
In Avengers: Doomsday's second trailer, it was confirmed that the Fantastic Four of Earth-828 know Victor Von Doom. This means the villain is also from Earth-828, a separate universe from the mainline MCU movies and shows. Therefore, without Loki and the titular character's story that expanded the multiverse, it can theoretically be said that neither The Fantastic Four nor Doctor Doom would exist, as none of these characters have been established in the MCU's core universe. Yes, Loki may have been vital to Kang's origins in much more overt ways, but it accidentally became the same for Doom's.
Loki Season 2 Already Addressed Doomsday's Potential Kang Plot Hole
If Loki could be accused of anything, it is setting up Kang the Conqueror only for his villain arc not to pay off. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania added to this by introducing the Council of Kangs who are seemingly still out there plotting to take over the multiverse. Avengers: Doomsday, though, will have Doom as the central villain, meaning the lack of Kang development will need to be addressed somehow.
Interestingly, though, Loki season 2 could be used to explain this plot hole. At the end of Loki, the TVA, renewed under the leadership of Mobius and Agent B-15, was shown keeping a very close eye on variants of Kang. Therefore, Avengers: Doomsday could explain that the TVA simply kept Kang's threat at bay, but that they are unable to do so with Doom unless Loki himself gets directly involved. If this were the case, Loki would not only be vital to Doom's MCU inclusion via its opening scenes, but also be equally vital to his replacement of Kang.
