EXCLUSIVE: Eric Martin, head writer and executive producer for Loki Season 2, will join Tobias Weymar in producing I’m Not a Robot, a feature adaptation of rising Dutch filmmaker Victoria Warmerdam‘s Oscar-qualified short of the same name, through their production company, Rearview Pictures.
In the original work, which won Best Short at the 2023 Sitges Film Festival, music producer Lara faces an existential crisis after repeatedly failing a routine CAPTCHA test, leading her to question whether she might actually be a robot. As her day spirals out of control, she desperately searches for answers in a darkly comedic exploration of identity and self-perception.
The film’s festival run has also seen it secure wins at Cannes Lions and multiple Oscar-qualifying festivals, including Bengaluru, Leuven, and Flickerfest, as well as Bucheon. So far, it’s been selected for over 100 festivals worldwide, including 15 Oscar-qualifying festivals such as HollyShorts, Palm Springs, and Hawaii International Film Festival.
Warmerdam will direct the feature take from her own script, as with the short. Trent of the Netherlands-based OAK Motion Pictures returns to produce alongside Rearview. Currently, the project is part of TalentScope, an international talent development program organized by The Netherlands Film Fund in collaboration with the prestigious TorinoFilmLab and ACE Producers.
Said Warmerdam, “I’m excited to partner with Rearview and explore new creative opportunities. This next step allows me to stay true to my voice while collaborating with a team that shares my passion for bold, thought-provoking storytelling. Together, we aim to reach a wider, more diverse audience, taking them on a surprising journey.”
Blending dark humor, absurdism, and sharp social commentary in her work, Warmerdam has quickly established herself as a bold and unique voice in international cinema. Her films often explore the fine line between drama and comedy, challenging conventional female-driven storytelling in innovative ways. Warmerdam’s previous shorts, Mustachio and Short Calf Muscle, have garnered over 100 awards and 60 nominations at international festivals, including Flickers: Rhode Island Film Festival, Leeds Film Festival, and LA Shorts. She frequently collaborates with her partner Trent, whose OAK Motion Pictures produced the Sundance breakout hits Speak No Evil and The Wound, as well as projects that have premiered at Cannes, SXSW, Berlinale, and Tribeca.
Co-founded in 2022 by Martin, Weymar and Dan Briggs, Rearview Pictures is focused on bringing the great, character-driven stories of the here and now to screens big and small. The company has a wide and genre-agnostic slate of feature and TV projects in various stages of development at assorted studios and streamers.
Warmerdam and Martin are both repped by Entertainment 360. Martin is also with CAA and attorney Michael Schenkman.
