Lily James has revealed she was 'beyond burned out' and 'losing the joy' before taking a break from acting to go on a 'solo trip of a lifetime'.

The actress, 37, has starred in back-to-back films including Cinderella, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, Pride and Prejudice, Baby Driver and more since she was 21.

And to reset, Lily headed on an eight-month-long adventure in Cambodia where she 'recharged' and 'found a new source of inspiration'.

Speaking to Flaunt magazine, she said: 'I've worked pretty consistently since I was 21, and I was beginning to just feel so even beyond burned out. I was scared I was losing the joy and losing that kind of fire.

'I really had to be honest with myself. I've had an incredible time [going on] different kinds of adventures, owning my time, and taking the reins back of my life.'

She added: 'You have to recharge. I think going from one job to the next, not only was I feeling like I wasn't recharging or finding new sources of inspiration, but also blink, and you've missed a year.'

During her adventure, Lily took five weeks where she helped with 'mind-blowing and meaningful' work for NGOs Heartprint, Safe Haven and for Unicef.

Now recharged and ready to get back to work, the British star is focused on adjusting back to her life in London.

'I'm kind of in this moment of shape-shifting back into work, and it feels a little uncomfortable. But I've also found love again. It's reminded me how much I love acting and finding a character, storytelling, and that stuff. So it's a relief,' she added.

Following her trip to Cambodia, Lily took to Instagram to share a glimpse into helping the non-profit as she spent time at a school.

She wrote: 'Earlier this year, I visited Cambodia and was lucky enough to spend some time with the NGO HEARTPRINT @heartprint_cambodia, learning about the life-changing work they are doing to support those who need it most.

'They have built homes, provide education, clean water and have created a safe community hub for children living in need. They have also installed the first ever free public playgrounds in Siem Reap.

'Their joy and passion was limitless and deeply grounding. I felt moved and inspired by their holistic approach to charity and spending time at the community with the children has left a true impression on my heart.

'As Wendy, Garry & Bor Srey Pheap have written on their wall: “Never believe that a few caring people can’t change the world, for indeed, that’s all who ever have.”

'At Heartprint, their hearts are full, determined and generous, and the work they are doing is truly life-changing. Please visit their website to learn more about this incredible NGO in Cambodia.'

As for work, it has been reported Lily has signed on to star in Seasons, a horror thriller directed by Drew Hancock for Amazon Studios.

The actress also has three projects scheduled for release.

They are the action thriller Cliffhanger, the mystery drama Harmonia (directed by Guy Nattiv) and the animated comedy The Angry Birds Movie 3.

Elsewhere during her time out from acting, Lily also enjoyed a 'dream' Spanish getaway with her pal Billie Piper as she shared a glimpse of the trip on Instagram.

The actress posed in a black bikini and a sheer white minidress as she enjoyed the sunny break with the former Doctor Who star.

Lily's snaps showed herself and Billie enjoying a lavish yacht ride before heading out for a walk at sunset.

The pair enjoyed an ice cream at the beach before posing for a beaming snap together during dinner.

Lily simply captioned the post: 'A dream.'

Back in June, Lily sparked romance rumours after she was spotted with musician Alex Cameron in LA.

They were seen smiling and joking as the pair visited Stella Bar and El Cid with a friend.

The date came months after Lily was linked to top Hollywood stuntman Bobby Holland Hanton.

During an interview with Collider while promoting her 2022 movie What's Love Got To Do With It? the actress briefly touched on the topic of romance.

'Yeah, I think that we're sort of encouraged by society to, you know, this lightning bolt moment where you're gonna meet the man of your dreams, or woman of your dreams, or whoever of your dreams...

'And it's going to be, that's it, you're settled, and you're done for life.

'Happily ever after, dot, dot, dot - and that's just not the case.'
