The star renowned for growling and punching his way through endless quick-and-dirty action movies has indeed ventured into fright-flick territory only a few times in his career. His biggest and best-remembered horror foray, The Haunting, turned out to be less about spectral spookiness and more about noisy action, but nevertheless grossed $180 million on a budget of $80 million. Neeson’s one supernatural film project of the 1980s, High Spirits, has a horror premise, but is more of a comedic fantasy than a true exercise in the macabre.
Neeson’s only true horror film, the twisty and twisted After.Life, premiered in 2009, quickly vanishing into obscurity until recently resurfacing on Pluto TV, making it available for free to anyone curious about the Taken star’s hand with the horror genre. The movie grossed just $2 million when it received a limited 2010 release following its film festival bow.
After.Life casts Neeson as a funeral director charged with preparing the body of deceased car crash victim Christina Ricci, who shockingly wakes up on the embalming table, and spends much of the rest of the movie without clothing. Critics weren’t buying any of this when the film came out, sending it to a 24% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers were unimpressed by the film’s direction, calling it lacking in thrills, and dismissing it as a pretentious Saw knock-off.
ScreenRant’s own 2010 After.Life review was lukewarm at best, saying of the horror exercise, “There was certainly tension throughout the entire film, but I'm one of those people that only wants to be jerked around so many times by a "is it or isn't it" kind of story. After a while it just gets old.” The review goes on, “Basically, if you like the sort of film that keeps you guessing as to what's really going on or if you've missed seeing Christina Ricci naked since Black Snake Moan - then After.Life might be worth an hour and a half of your time.”
A 2022 ScreenRant article ranking Neeson’s tiny sampling of horror forays placed After.Life at #1, saying of the forgotten film, “After.Life has a very intriguing premise, a chilly atmosphere and a sinister, low-key turn from Neeson. That said, the film also suffers from a plodding pace, and feels like a concept better suited to an episode of a horror anthology than a standalone feature.”
After.Life is currently streaming for free on Pluto TV.
