Leo Messi becomes Inter Miami’s all-time leader in goals and assists

Lionel Messi now sits atop every meaningful offensive leaderboard at Inter Miami CF. The 38-year-old has become the club’s all-time leader in goals, assists, and combined goal contributions, a trifecta that would be impressive at any club but is especially striking given that he’s accomplished it in roughly 107 appearances.

The numbers behind the milestone

Messi’s current stat line reads like a video game save file someone forgot to set to “realistic”: 92 goals and 51 assists across approximately 106-107 appearances for the South Florida club.

Earlier this year, on May 9, the club highlighted a snapshot of his production at that point: 87 goals and 57 assists in 101 appearances. The numbers have continued climbing since.

Perhaps even more absurd is the pace at which Messi has dismantled MLS records that existed long before he arrived. He became the fastest player in league history to reach 100 regular-season goal contributions, needing just 64 games to hit that mark with 59 goals and 41 assists.

He had already become the club’s all-time leading goalscorer by October 2024, just over a year after arriving.

A trophy cabinet to match the individual records

Since his arrival in July 2023, Inter Miami has transformed from a middling expansion-era project into a genuine contender. The silverware collection tells the story clearly: the 2023 Leagues Cup, the 2024 Supporters’ Shield (awarded to the team with the best regular-season record), and the 2025 MLS Cup.

Before Messi walked through the door, Inter Miami had never finished above the playoff line and was better known for its celebrity ownership group, led by David Beckham, than for anything happening on the pitch.

What Messi has meant to MLS

MLS has had designated player signings before. Beckham himself pioneered the model in 2007 when he joined the LA Galaxy, and players like Thierry Henry, David Villa, and most recently Lorenzo Insigne have brought star power to the league. But none of them arrived at the peak of their sport’s Mount Rushmore conversation.

Messi did. Eight Ballon d’Or awards, a World Cup trophy, and a case for greatest of all time don’t typically precede a move to Fort Lauderdale.
