A photo of Stephanie Hsu as Ruby in Laid (2024) imposed on a photo of Zosia Mamet as AJ and Tommy Martinez's Isaac looking shocked.

Warning: This post contains spoilers for Laid season 1.Laid star Tommy Martinez discusses the dark romantic comedy’s explosive season finale. The Peacock show, led by Everything Everywhere All at Once star Stephanie Hsu, follows Ruby's bizarre journey to break a curse that causes her former lovers to mysteriously die. Martinez plays Isaac, who hires Ruby to organize his parent's anniversary party. The two bond over a shared love of musical theater, as Ruby scrambles to lift the hex on her love life with help from her best friend AJ (Zosia Mamet).

In an interview with ScreenRant’s own Grant Hermanns, Martinez delves into a pivotal moment for Ruby where she decides between maintaining her "safe" arrangement with Richie—her invincible ex unaffected by the curse—or risking everything to pursue her love for Isaac. The actor elaborates on the emotional stakes and the familiar yet vulnerable crossroads his character Isaac navigates with Ruby. Here's what he had to say:

Yeah, I think that moment is a super pivotal moment in the story where Ruby has this choice of taking this leap with someone new and that obviously feels good, or you can go into the direction of something that's familiar and chemistry that's already been built up over the last experiences that they've had, or parts of their relationship.

I think we've all been in those moments in real life, with our actual relationships. But yeah, I guess everyone's just gonna have to tune in and see what that's like. It's just weighing those two options there, something new and feels good, but can be kind of scary to open up and be vulnerable and go with this new, strange person, or go with something that's familiar and is starting to feel good.

What Laid’s Heart-Stopping Finale Means

The Past Comes Knocking

As Ruby and her friends work to transfer the curse and escape its deadly grip, their efforts seem temporarily successful. Believing one of her previous flames to be alive and well, Ruby takes a leap of faith, choosing to leave Richie and the safety he represents behind in favor of embracing her love for Isaac. However, by the end of episode 7, it becomes clear that Isaac’s survival is far from guaranteed, leaving Ruby’s happiness once again hanging by a thread.

The finale’s emotional climax comes with the arrival of Ruby’s estranged father, played by François Chau (Lost, The Expanse). Appearing on her doorstep with a therapy letter she had written but never sent—delivered by Richie without her knowledge—Ruby’s father reveals that he understands her predicament because he, too, suffered from the same mysterious hex. His sudden return not only reignites unresolved familial tensions but also reframes the curse as part of a generational pattern, rooted in intergenerational trauma.

This revelation raises questions about the hex's mythology while providing an opportunity for Laid to explore Ruby’s family history and the origins of the curse in a potential second season. If Laid season 1 was about Ruby revisiting her adult relationships, season 2 could dive into her childhood, unpacking how her family’s past shaped her tendency to avoid accountability and sidestep emotional intimacy.
