Reese Witherspoon, Kris Jenner and More React to Chelsea Handler's Strict Family Vacation Rules
Chelsea Handler is breaking down the behavior she will and will not be having on family vacations.
The comedian detailed the strict rules she sets for family members who want to vacation with her, resharing a letter to her family featured in her 2025 book of comedic essays, I'll Have What She's Having.
"It’s family vacation season, which means it’s time to reread the rules," Handler captioned a July 22 Instagram post alongside a nine-slide carousel of the excerpt. "If you want to vacation with me, these are the rules."
The Chelsea Lately star began by emphasizing that she decided to address her family after she felt "embarrassed and taken advantage of" following a trip during which there was a "definite shortfall of manners" by her relatives.
As such, she emphasized those on vacation with her must be courteous to everyone on the trip, stressing that her family must "acknowledge their existence out of decency and respect."
Simply put, she noted, "I treat my employees like family, and I expect you to do the same."
She went on to lay out specific etiquette requirements surrounding dining, drinking and cleanup.
Beyond asking guests to "not consume copious amounts of alcohol" or "complain about food while you are eating it," she pointed out that before emphasizing that everyone must pick up after themselves.
Not to mention, displaying common courtesy, with her sharing as an example, "When I make a pitcher of margaritas, don’t finish that pitcher unless you’re willing to make another."
As for another rule? Handler demands her family be "present" during moments when they're all together, noting how her "best memory" of the referenced trip was when the group played a game called Oval Office.
Ultimately, the TV personality stressed that her family—which includes her five siblings as well as many nieces and nephews—needs to understand that the "trips are not guaranteed," asking her loved ones to simply bring "an attitude of contribution." As for what that means?
“A contribution does not mean financial," Handler wrote. "It means: What pleasantness are you planning to bring on vacation? It is not a free-for-all."

She concluded her letter by emphasizing the love she has for her family, writing, "I don’t care how much our family annoys you. It’s the only one we’ve got, and we are stuck together for life."
And Handler's detailed vacation rules were met with support from celebrity friends and fans alike. As Khloe Kardashian wrote, "Here here!!!!!," while her mom Kris Jenner commented, "AMEN."
Reese Witherspoon noted her agreement with a "Right on" alongside a bullseye emoji, with Chrissy Teigen commenting, "HOOOOOOOOOOOOBOY!!!!!"
Sophia Bush, meanwhile, took a moment to highlight a rule of her own.
"All of this!! And while we’re at it … stack your bins at the airport!" she commented. "TSA doesn’t work for us either. Go CH, go!!"
