Following the worldwide success of the first film, Netflix has confirmed a sequel to its hit animated pic KPop Demon Hunters with Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans back as directors. Sony Pictures Animation will produce the pic. The sequel marks the first project out of the exclusive multi-year writing and directing deal across animation.
“With KPop Demon Hunters, Maggie and Chris didn’t just reach audiences, they ignited a global fandom that crossed languages, generations, and genres,” said Bela Bajaria, Netflix Chief Content Officer. “We’re incredibly proud to deepen our partnership with them and, together with our partners at Sony Pictures Animation, build this universe in ways that will surprise and delight fans all over the world.”
The news comes in the wake of Netflix’s most-watched movie ever adding a near $6M to its $19M August take for a near $25M domestic gross.
“I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters,” said Kang. “There’s so much more to this world we have built and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning.”
“These characters are like family to us, their world has become our second home,” said Appelhans We’re excited to write their next chapter, challenge them and watch them evolve — and continue pushing the boundaries of how music, animation and story can come together.”
With over 325 million views, KPop Demon Hunters is the most watched Netflix movie ever. It’s also the first Netflix movie to hit No. 1 at the box office back in late August with a two-day gross of $19M.
