Fall has officially begun — at least according to Kourtney Kardashian's hair. The reality star and Lemme founder kicked off what she calls "witchy season" in a moody mirror selfie on Instagram on Sept. 20, debuting a fresh set of one of this year's most popular hair trends: "Birkin" bangs. The cut feels effortlessly cool and a little mysterious, giving her look an instant edge that feels perfect for this time of year.
Named after '60s style icon Jane Birkin, the fringe is defined by its slightly uneven, piecey texture and flattering, eyebrow-grazing length. "Getting bangs, especially Birkin bangs, is a great way to instantly change up your look," hairstylist Devin Toth of Salon SCK tells PS. "They shorten the appearance of your face. They're not too heavy or too wispy but rather somewhere perfect in between. They're the perfect balance of both soft and geometric." This easy, airy quality is what makes the bangs so versatile — you can wear them with long layers like Kardashian, or work them into a shag or a straight, sleek style.
Toth adds that Kardashian's bangs work so well because they're cut a little longer on the sides, which, "basically frames and rounds off the top corners of her face instead of exposing that area. The effect is a softer look instead of an even more angular look."
Birkin bangs have been spotted everywhere this year, and Hollywood can't get enough of them. Dakota Johnson has made the wispy fringe her signature, not to mention Zendaya, Megan Fox, and even Gigi Hadid have stepped out with the style. Kardashian's fresh cut proves the bangs are still going strong, and that they work for everything from red carpet glam to casual mirror selfies.
If Kardashian's photo has you considering a chop, the good news is that Birkin bangs are as easy to style as they are to wear. Prep damp hair with Giovanni Frizz Be Gone Anti-Frizz Hair Serum ($26) or Moroccanoil Intense Smoothing Serum ($32) to keep them sleek. Blow-dry forward with a round brush, then do a quick pass with a flat iron, like the Jose Eber Petite Flat Iron ($45) or Drybar's The Tress Press Digital Styling Iron ($169) for a soft finish. Lock everything in with a styling spray, like the Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Heat Styling Spray ($34) or Mane's Cotton Candy Dry Texture & Hair Volume Spray ($26), and refresh on day two with dry shampoo like IGK's Jet Lag Weightless Dry Shampoo ($34) or the LolaVie Powder Perfect Dry Shampoo ($25) to keep them light and airy.
With Kardashian officially joining the Birkin-bang fan club, consider this your sign to book that appointment. After all, nothing says fall like a fresh fringe.
