Korea Box Office: ‘The King’s Warden’ Surpasses 11 Million Admissions

Historical drama “The King’s Warden” continued its historic run at the South Korean box office, crossing the 11 million admissions milestone during the weekend of Mar. 6–8.

According to data from KOBIS, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council, the film maintained a dominant 80.27% revenue share, showing little sign of slowing down in its second month of release.

“The King’s Warden” earned $11.3 million from 1,725,766 admissions over the three-day weekend. Directed by Jang Hang-jun and starring Yoo Hae-jin and Park Ji-hoon, the film centers on the bond between a village chief and the deposed teenage King Danjong. Since its Feb. 4 debut, the title has amassed a cumulative gross of $74.3 million from 11,503,742 admissions, firmly cementing its status as a cultural phenomenon.

Pixar’s animated adventure “Hoppers” climbed to second place in its first full weekend of wide release, earning $1.5 million from 233,822 admissions.Since its mid-week launch on Mar. 4, it has reached a cumulative gross of $2 million.

In third place, the espionage thriller “Humint” earned $309,274 over the weekend. Directed by Ryoo Seung-wan and starring Zo In-sung and Park Jeong-min, the film has now reached a cumulative total of $13 million from 1,932,209 admissions.

The local comedy-drama “Mad Dance Office” debuted in fourth place, earning $90,442 over the weekend. Directed by Cho Hyeon-jin, the film stars Yeom Hye-ran as Guk-hee, a meticulous district office manager who has lived a perfectly structured, by-the-book life. When her daughter suddenly disappears from contact, Guk-hee’s carefully planned world begins to unravel. She stumbles into a flamenco studio, where the unfamiliar rhythm of dance and the support of her subordinate Yeon-kyung (Choi Sung-eun) help her rediscover the beat of her own life. Since its Mar. 4 release, the film has earned $162,421.

The musical drama “Choir of God” took fifth place, adding $71,752 to its cumulative total of $9 million. It was followed by the Chinese animated sequel “Ne Zha 2” in sixth, which earned $38,677 for a total of $321,010. “Hamnet” took seventh place with $56,097 and has a total of $286,795.

The Bride!” debuted in eighth place, earning $60,728 over the weekend. Since its Mar. 4 launch, it has grossed $134,131. Rounding out the top ten were the live-action remake “5 Centimeters per Second” in ninth place with $45,866 (total $513,267) and the Norwegian drama “Sentimental Value” in 10th with $39,765 (total $332,571).

The overall market collective gross for the weekend was $14.2 million, a shade under last week’s $14.4 million.
