While Kit Harington has done plenty of projects since the Game of Thrones finale, his upcoming MGM+ series will still scratch an itch for fans of the iconic HBO show. Ever since season 1 of HBO’s Game of Thrones began airing in 2011, the show’s mark on the pop culture landscape has only grown with each passing year. For one thing, there would be no The Witcher franchise, no Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and no Critical Role shows on Prime Video without the success of the series.

The blockbuster popularity of HBO’s George R.R. Martin adaptation proved that there was a massive mainstream market for big-budget, unapologetically R-rated fantasy shows, prompting a slew of shows to follow in its wake. Of course, there are the official Game of Thrones spinoffs, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, but there is also Starz’s Outlander, Netflix’s Castlevania and Arcane, AMC’s entire Immortal Universe, and the aforementioned Critical Role shows The Mighty Nein and The Legend of Vox Machina.

This is without even getting into the many major A-list stars who were first given major roles by Game of Thrones. Emilia Clarke starred in Terminator: Genisys and Solo: A Star Wars Story, Sophie Turner played Phoenix in X-Men: Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix, Nathalie Emmanuel joined the Fast & Furious franchise, and Jason Momoa has starred in everything from Aquaman to Fast X to Dune to A Minecraft Movie since Game of Thrones killed off his character. Now, MGM+’s A Tale Of Two Cities can give another series star a perfect comeback role.

Kit Harington has been busy since the series wrapped up in 2019, starring in the TV shows Extrapolations, Industry, and Too Much as well as the movies Eternals, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, Eternal Love, and The Dreadful, among others. However, the role of Sydney Carton in MGM+’s upcoming period drama A Tale of Two Cities will still be catnip for fans of Game of Thrones thanks to their similarities.

Carton is the antihero of Dickens’ 1859 epic novel of the same name, a sprawling piece of historical fiction set between London and Paris at the time of the French Revolution. While Harington has been in plenty of shows and movies since Game of Thrones ended, A Tale of Two Cities is an epic historical drama in the vein of Apple TV’s multi-generational adaptation Pachinko that relies on both long-term character arcs and big set pieces.

Although Carton is a much more morally ambiguous character than Jon Snow ever was, his gradual transformation across the story of the novel means that A Tale of Two Cities is likely to still appeal to fans of the star’s work in Game of Thrones. With a stellar supporting cast that includes François Civil, Mirren Mack, and Sharon Duncan-Brewster, the MGM+ miniseries has the potential to be the most compelling screen adaptation of a Dickens story since 2019’s underrated The Personal History of David Copperfield.

When asked whether he would return to the role of Jon Snow in a new show, Harington responded bluntly that he would not want to go anywhere near such a spinoff. This could come as a blow to fans, since there were rumors of a spinoff starring Jon Snow a few years ago, only for the creators to abandon the series since they weren’t able to find a convincing angle for its plot.

However, it is arguably a good thing for Harington’s screen career. The ending of Game of Thrones was infamously divisive, and many major cast members have spent the years since trying to avoid typecasting by taking on radically different roles. As such, Harington might be right to prioritize shows like A Tale of Two Cities over returning to the Game of Thrones franchise if he ever hopes to emerge from the original show's long shadow.
