'Kingdom Hearts 4' Sets Official Release Window

It has already been a very long wait for Kingdom Hearts 4. Square Enix officially announced the next mainline installment in 2022 as part of the franchise's 20th anniversary celebration, offering our first glimpse at an older Sora and the mysterious world of Quadratum. Updates have been considerably harder to come by in the years since. That drought has made every new glimpse at Kingdom Hearts 4 a major event for fans, especially with so many questions still surrounding Sora's next adventure. The series has always built much of its identity around sending Sora, Donald, and Goofy into worlds inspired by Disney movies, and plenty of potential additions have emerged since Kingdom Hearts 3 arrived in 2019.

Of course, the biggest question has simply been when players will actually get their hands on the game. Square Enix had yet to provide a release window for Kingdom Hearts 4, leaving its arrival one of the biggest mysteries surrounding the long-awaited sequel. We finally have an answer, alongside our first look at another Disney world joining Sora's next adventure.

‘Kingdom Hearts 4’ Is Heading to the Land of the Dead in 2027

Square Enix revealed during D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event that Kingdom Hearts 4 will officially release in 2027, with the game confirmed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Xbox on PC, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. The announcement came alongside the new Coco Showcase Trailer (seen above), confirming that Pixar's 2017 animated movie will be represented as a world in Kingdom Hearts 4. Coco becomes the first Disney and Pixar property confirmed for the game, and its colorful Land of the Dead offers a dramatically different setting from Quadratum.

The 2027 window also finally puts a finish line on one of Square Enix's longest-running waits. By the time Kingdom Hearts 4 arrives, five years will have passed since its original announcement and eight years since the release of Kingdom Hearts 3. Kingdom Hearts 4 will begin the franchise's Lost Master Arc and continue Sora's story following the events of Kingdom Hearts 3 and Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory. An exact release date has not yet been announced.
