The second season of the King of the Hill revival, and the show's 15th season overall, has proven that Hank Hill, Mike Judge, and Greg Daniels still have what it takes to reign. King of the Hill now follows Hank and Peggy Hill juggling retired life, their colorful friends, and their adult son Bobby and his burgeoning restaurant. Season 15 sees them handling everything from Peggy going through menopause to Bobby joining a reality cooking competition.

As with the first season of the revival, King of the Hill season 15 features more of the show's grounded and realistic moments of everyday life, but in a more modern setting. As the trailer for King of the Hill season 15 already showed, Hank and Peggy deal with an AI scam, electric trucks, and science fiction conventions. It's a blend of classic King of the Hill and newer developments, and I am happy to report, it's a winning blend.

King of the Hill Season 15 Is Like Hank: Dependable, Wholesome, & Ready To Grow

By far the best part of King of the Hill season 15 is its dependability and wholesomeness. As with the original show and season 14, every episode pits Hank's traditional sensibilities against a rapidly changing modern world. Putting this well-established and well-known character into the present day allows Mike Judge's uniquely common sense to shine and poke a good bit of fun at the absurdity of the world we live in.

King of the Hill relies heavily upon its formula, but that's not a bad thing. There are no major surprises in store for season 15, but the dependability of Hank and the rest of the cast of King of the Hill is what people tune in for. Even though the show is largely about Hank learning to let go of his initial stubbornness to grow and change, there's a sense of dependability there: you can always trust Hank to do the right thing and make things better than he found them.

Part of the allure of King of the Hill as an adult animated comedy, from the very beginning, has been its calm and grounded take on the genre, especially in comparison to shows like Family Guy or South Park. That allure remains in season 15, and each of the new episodes feels just as wholesome and comforting. King of the Hill season 15 still has all the heartfelt emotion, earnest storytelling, and friendly oddball faces now that it did in 1997.

King of the Hill itself, like Hank and Peggy, has gotten older, and it has only gotten better with age.

In a similar vein, viewers can also always trust King of the Hill to grow as a series. Season 14 was a great installment, but season 15 is still better. It doesn't have to do nearly as much setup as the first revival season did, and when it does delve into flashbacks to the years between the original and revival, it has a more interesting story to tell. This newest season also ends on a higher note than season 14 did, with a very clear way to continue into the future.

King of the Hill season 15's standout episode is, to me, episode 6, "Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes," and it highlights exactly how the revival is making the most of its setup and legacy. This episode sees Hank and Peggy dealing with the challenge of aging, and it handles it extremely gracefully. Hank is helpful, Peggy is realistic and raw, and the entire episode finds a perfect balance of humor and reality. King of the Hill itself, like Hank and Peggy, has gotten older, and it has only gotten better with age.

King of the Hill Season 15 Greatly Improved Upon Bobby's Side Plots

When King of the Hill season 14 returned last year, it had to prove that it could recapture the magic of the original show while breaking new ground. It accomplished that goal in spades and cemented itself as one of the greatest TV revivals in decades, but it still had a few problems. Luckily, King of the Hill season 15, like Hank himself, has learned to grow from its mistakes and come out even better than it was before.

One of season 14's biggest drawbacks was its split storylines thanks to Bobby's life as an independent adult. His side plots in Dallas weren't nearly as engaging as Hank and Peggy's stories in Arlen, and the revival was noticeably at its best when Bobby was paired with one of his parents. That remains the case for season 15, with some of Bobby's early episodes falling a bit flat in their portrayal of the younger generation, and his misadventures with his parents working as some of the season's better episodes.

Luckily, KotH finds a way to significantly improve upon his side stories. Bobby's budding relationship with Connie is largely responsible for that improvement. Connie serves as an anchor to Bobby's episodes, which gives him a more engaging overarching story to follow. Their challenges in the early days of their relationship mesh perfectly with the love they clearly have for one another, resulting in a story that is equal parts conflict and wholesome resolution. Bobby and Connie are quickly becoming a relationship that matches some of Hank and Peggy's best features while also adding something new, fresh, and young to the formula.

The other side characters of King of the Hill have also gotten a boost in quality in season 15. Minh, Kahn, Nancy, and Boomhauer all got great episodes that showcased them as characters better than season 14 did. King of the Hill season 15 is using its cast of colorful characters to greater effect, both for comedy and for wholesome and meaningful storytelling. Hank and Peggy are still the stars of the show, but the rest of King of the Hill's cast is giving it newfound depth.

Some aspects of the revival have also benefited simply from time; the updated animation feels much less jarring now than it did last year, as do the new voice actors for characters like Dale. King of the Hill season 15 is also more ready to directly address its legacy, and it has a few nice moments surrounding characters like Luanne and John Redcorn. In short, King of the Hill season 15 has taken everything great about both the original and the revival, married them together, and improved upon them both. It's well worth watching for new and returning viewers alike.
