Kensington Palace Reacts to Kate Middleton Clothing Controversy in Rare Statement

Kate Middleton’s reign as a style queen isn’t over yet.

After the Princess of Wales and her fashion sense became a big topic of conversation due to a report claiming she would no longer allow her clothes to overshadow her work, Kensington Palace set the record straight in a rare statement.

“Over the last week, I have received numerous questions about a story regarding The Princess of Wales’s clothing and how Kensington Palace shares information about her outfits,” said a statement from a palace spokesperson to E! News. “To clarify, the comments that appeared in the article were from me, not The Princess of Wales.”

“The comments that were reported should not be directly attributed to The Princess of Wales,” the statement continued. “To be clear, there has been no change in our approach to sharing information about Her Royal Highness’s clothing.”

Kensington Palace’s statement comes over a week after The Times reported that Kate hoped to emphasize the work she’s done following her battle with cancer as opposed to what she’s wearing during those outings.

Since her engagement to Prince William in 2010, royal watchers have kept a close eye on Kate’s style. Over the course of her royal career, Kate—who is mom to George, 11, Charlotte, 9, and Louis, 6, with her husband of more than a decade—has often made headlines as she’s stepped out for work engagements and royal tours in pieces from her favorite designers including Alexander McQueen, Emilia Wickstead, Jenny Packham and Catherine Walker.

While the palace has never formally addressed her outfits, Jenny Packham previously shared rare details about dressing the royal for special occasions.

“It’s always quite a collaboration," the British designer told WWD in 2014. “You kind of always know where it’s going to be worn."

At times, Kate has also used her fashion to commemorate historic moments and honor her late mother-in-law Princess Diana, whose pearl-drop earrings have become a staple in her wardrobe, and Queen Elizabeth, who often lent her the Cartier Halo Tiara and the Cambridge Lover's Knot Tiara, worn during state dinners.
