Kayce Faces The Worst Villain In Yellowstone History In Marshals Season 1 Finale

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Marshals season 1, episode 13, "Wolves at the Door."After 13 episodes, Marshals season 1 ends with the introduction of the worst villain in Yellowstone's history. Marketed as the beginning of a new era of Taylor Sheridan's neo-Western, the Luke Grimes-led series is the first sequel series in the franchise. It follows Kayce as he is forced to tackle a new path after the unexpected death of Monica. Instead of a show that simply revolves around the Dutton clan and their legacy in Montana, Marshals is formatted for network TV by making it a procedural, which means that its titular team tackles cases on a weekly basis.

Marshals debuted late in the 2025-2026 TV cycle, but it immediately made an impression, shooting at the top of the ratings. It is officially the most-watched new show on traditional broadcast, so it wasn't surprising when CBS made an early decision to renew it for its sophomore year. This allowed for a ballsy Marshals season 1 finale, "Wolves at the Door," wherein the show goes back to its Yellowstone roots by tackling property politics in Montana while also confirming the show's true villain — the Weavers.

Marshals Season 1 Finale Establishes The Weavers As Its Main Villain

Tom Weaver in Marshals CBS

Tom and Dolly Weavers were introduced earlier in the season as new players in the Yellowstone franchise. They're a ranching family who grew closer to Kayce and Tate. Sheridan's original series was used by new ranchers coming to Montana in the hopes of taking down John Dutton III at the top of the hierarchy. In fact, this was a recurring story in the flagship. While there were other complications with other aspects of its storytelling, including dealing with the government and Broken Rock, some of the best feuds in Yellowstone were between the Duttons and their fellow ranchers.

Kayce, however, was never really directly tied to those plots. Instead, his storylines were more focused on balancing between his two worlds. He was pulled into these conflicts when it was time to defend his family's legacy. This time, however, he is on his own to deal with a familiar threat, as the Weavers are confirmed to be doing a hostile takeover of East Camp after he politely turned down their offer to buy the property. In "Wolves at the Door," Kayce assists after another assassination attempt at Rainwater. After narrowly escaping the attack by an unknown antagonist thanks to his fellow marshals' assistance, the episode ends with the reveal that Tom is actually behind the attack.

Oblivious to the truth, Kayce falls into the trap of trusting Tom and Dolly when they check up on him and offer to take Tate fishing. The parting scenes of Marshals season 1 see Calvin and Belle being ambushed by the rancher's goons, while Monica's son happily boards the villain's plane. Back at East Camp, Kayce spends more time with Dolly, not knowing that his son is in danger.

Why The Weavers Are Worse Than Any Of Yellowstone's Villains

Tom and Dolly in Marshals CBS

The Weavers aren't exactly a new category of characters in the Yellowstone franchise. It's simply natural for the Duttons to butt heads with people who want to take their land, considering that they had been at the top of the pyramid for so long. Arguably, some of the flagship's most memorable bad guys fall into this category, such as Dan Jenkins, as well as Malcolm and Teal Beck — all of them doing despicable things to get what they want. What separates the Weavers, however, from Yellowstone's previous villains is the immense betrayal that comes with their ruthlessness.

For context, the Weavers were introduced in Marshals when Kayce and his team saved Tom from an accident. Instead of developing a relationship with the whole team, however, they seemed to zero in on the Duttons. Dolly was positioned to be Kayce's new love interest, the first one after Monica's death, which initially spooked him. Through the episodes, however, he has become more open about the chance of exploring a romance with her. Meanwhile, Tom has been slowly gaining his trust, to the point that Kayce doesn't even think twice about letting Tate go with him without supervision.

All throughout Marshals season 1, Kayce has never given the Weavers any reason to be hostile. He was polite, helpful, and even gracious. Even when he turned down the offer to buy East Camp, he did it in a way that appealed to their humanity by talking about how much he had lost. For Tom to retaliate brutally just because he didn't get his way effectively makes him the worst villain in Yellowstone history.

What The Weavers' Threat Means For Kayce's Future & Marshals Season 2

Tate and Kayce in Marshals CBS

Considering the cliffhanger involving Belle and Calvin, Marshals season 2 will have to immediately address who the culprit is behind the attack. They did spot Tom's henchman, and that's going to be the key for Kayce to figure out that the Weavers can't be trusted. It's possible that Tom doesn't harm Tate during their fishing trip, as he might opt to play the long game when it comes to his pursuit of East Camp. The activity could simply be another way to fully ingrain himself with the Duttons.

Because Marshals is on network TV, it's likely that this story with the Weavers will play out throughout all of its sophomore year. Despite premiering in the midseason, the CBS fall 2026 schedule confirms that it's coming back earlier than expected with an expanded episode count. This allows the show to truly spend time with this brewing conflict in Montana while Kayce also helps the team deal with local cases.
