Katherine Ryan has revealed what she loved about being a single mother as she reflected on touring with her first daughter Violet, now 15, before she was married.

The comedian, 41, who is currently on the road with her Battleaxe tour, admitted she looks back fondly on her time as a single mother as she described it as 'empowering to make all the decisions by yourself'.

The TV star, who now also shares two children Fenna, two, and Fred, three, with her husband Bobby Kootstra, spoke to MailOnline to explain how she approached parenthood differently when it was just her raising Violet by herself.

'I think that one of the things I loved about being a single mother and I still look back on fondly is it is very empowering to make all the decisions by yourself.

'I think to just make every choice without having to consult someone else.'

The comedian, 41 confessed she looks back fondly on her time as a single mother as she described it as 'empowering to make all the decisions be yourself'.

Katherine gave birth to Violet when she was 25 and just beginning her career in comedy playing smaller venues and art centres.

Raising her solo she explained she had no choice but to take Violet on tour with her, however now Bobby is available to stay at home with all three children.

Revealing how she still struggles with 'mum guilt', Katherine confessed: 'I'm doing this tour alone and Bobby has all the children, but I do really miss them.

'There is guilt I think about whatever type of working mother you decide to be. I'm not sure if dads have the same guilt. I haven't heard a lot about dad guilt, but maybe it's a thing.

'I think that there's a lot more trust in everyone's role in a heteronormative relationship where the man is working and the mother stays home.'

She added: 'Especially when kids are small. I feel like I should be the one to be there.'

Praising Bobby she continued: 'My husband is a great dad and obviously he's a stay at home dad and he does things brilliantly. But I get phone calls. Like, "where's the cough medicine?"

'I'm like, well, "it's in the cough medicine drawer where cough medicine goes."

Chatting about balancing work life with family life, Katherine has teamed up with Gousto for their recent Get It Off My Plate campaign

The campaign encourages the nation to share their mealtime mental load, which Katherine can relate to with a teenager, two toddlers and a husband

'So I do get those calls because my children are very small. But as they get older, Bobby is really leaning into that role more and he's super confident with them.'

An ambassador for the brand, the star explained: 'It's really about the mental load of having to prepare for meal times and think about the week ahead when life is so overwhelming.'

She joked: 'There's a trending girl dinner on social media right now. I think it's really lovely to be a single woman to be young and running around London eating chicken Caesar salad out of a martini glass. But you can't really be doing that for every meal.'

Explaining how Gousto helps her run her household of five and balance the different age groups she added: 'Even though I'm away at a lot of dinner times, I take a little packed lunch and I still have to think about the food order, the weekly shop is still my mental load.'
