How Jury Duty's James Marsden Stayed in Character for Ronald Gladden
Jury Duty is no longer OOTO.
Indeed, it’s time to circle back for the second season of Prime Video's hit series Jury Duty, this time titled Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat, about one unsuspecting real-life person sent on a work retreat with the other “employees" played by actors.
And while fan favorite Ronald Gladden was the one to experience the hilarity of season one firsthand, the season two trailer introduces viewers to our new hero: Anthony Norman.
As he explains in the Feb. 26 trailer, Anthony has been hired as a temp worker at Rockin’ Grandma’s, where he’ll assist with their upcoming company retreat. But Anthony finds himself thrust into the middle of a corporate takeover of the family-owned hot sauce company, all while trying to keep up with retreat activities like team-building, sessions with some questionable motivational speakers and even a company talent show.
Naturally, hilarity and absurdity ensue in the show, which premieres on Prime Video with three episodes March 20, followed by two episodes on March 27 and a three-episode finale on April 3.
“I real-life feel like I’m on a TV show,” Anthony tells the camera in the trailer, “but this is not something that you can just make up.”
Of course, it remains to be seen how Anthony will react to the final reveal that everything he experienced was fake, but as season one’s Ronald shared after the show’s premiere, it was a wild time.
"It was unlike anything I've ever experienced, hands down," he told E! News in 2023. "I signed up for this expecting to go into this getting an experience I've never had—they far exceeded those expectations."
Another thing Ronald didn’t realize he’d signed up for? Becoming real life friends with James Marsden, who played a heightened version of himself on season one.
"At the time it was hit and miss, to be honest," Ronald recalled about the version of himself James played on the show. "After I found out that wasn't who he really was—it was phenomenal, though."
And for James, having the chance to take part in something as groundbreaking as Jury Duty was a thrill.
“That kind of improvisational comedy where you have an outline, but a creative license to go in and play opposite people who can speak the same language,” he shared with The Hollywood Reporter in 2023. “I was always looking for an opportunity like that.”
In fact, it was his participation in the show that actually helped sell the circumstances to Ronald.
“He said to me, ‘The fact that James Marsden was there made it more believable,’” Marsden said. “That was a nice compliment, that I anchored the believability: ‘I’m on jury duty with this actor, who’s kind of a prick.’"
