With Godzilla’s Gareth Edwards at the helm, Jurassic World Rebirth has the chance to be the best movie in the franchise since Steven Spielberg’s original Jurassic Park. Universal is hoping to get the Jurassic Park series back on track after the bitter disappointment of Jurassic World Dominion. Jurassic World Rebirth has the original movie’s writer David Koepp penning the script, a cast of exciting newcomers including Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali, and a fast-approaching release date of July 2, 2025.

Set five years after Jurassic World Dominion, Jurassic World Rebirth’s plot will revolve around a team of scientists trying to extract a life-saving drug from three of the world’s most formidable dinosaurs. After the increasingly underwhelming Jurassic World trilogy, Rebirth will need to earn back the goodwill of the fan base. And based on Edwards’ previous work (particularly his first big-budget blockbuster), it seems as though the future of the Jurassic Park franchise is in safe hands — and may just deliver the best entry since the Spielberg original.

Gareth Edwards' Godzilla Reboot Proves Jurassic World Rebirth Is In Good Hands

Edwards Finally Delivered A Satisfying Hollywood Godzilla Movie

After making his feature-length directorial debut with the low-budget sci-fi thriller Monsters, Edwards got called up by Hollywood to make a monster movie on a much larger scale with a much bigger budget. Legendary Pictures tapped Edwards to helm the first entry in the MonsterVerse: a new Hollywood revamp of Godzilla. Edwards’ Godzilla was widely praised — it was met with a much more positive reception than Roland Emmerich’s previous American Godzilla movie from 1998, and a much more positive reception than any of the Jurassic Park sequels.

The only Jurassic Park movie with a higher Rotten Tomatoes score than Godzilla’s 76% is the Spielberg original with 92%. Every other Jurassic Park/World movie has received worse reviews than Edwards’ Godzilla reboot. The Lost World: Jurassic Park has 53%, Jurassic Park III has 49%, Jurassic World has 71%, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom has 46%, and Jurassic World Dominion has a dismal 29%. With Edwards in the director’s chair, Jurassic World Rebirth has a good chance of topping every other Jurassic sequel.

Godzilla (2014) Was Closer To Jurassic Park Than Most Of The World Trilogy

Edwards' Godzilla Remake Has A Jurassic Sense Of Wonder & Innovation

Godzilla vs MUTO in MonsterVerse's 2014 film, Godzilla.

Edwards’ Godzilla remake was more in line with Spielberg’s original vision for Jurassic Park than most of the previous Jurassic World films. The unscary Jurassic World trilogy increasingly focused on blockbuster spectacle over story and character. Dominion felt more like a globetrotting James Bond adventure than a Frankenstein-inspired sci-fi thriller. Godzilla, on the other hand, recaptures Spielberg’s sense of wonder, and his pitch-perfect blend of action and horror. Like Jurassic Park, it showed audiences something they’d never seen before: a computer-generated American CG Godzilla that looked and moved amazingly. Jurassic World Rebirth is in good hands with Edwards.
