Warning: Spoilers Ahead for Jujutsu Kaisen's Ending and Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo!

2020's biggest blockbuster anime series took little to no time introducing its breakout star, with Jujutsu Kaisen's Satoru Gojo quickly cementing a place among the greats. As is typical of Shonen Jump battle manga, the series heaped on genetic and supernatural advantages for the young teacher, from prodigious talent to being the only member of his clan born with the Six Eyes and Limitless technique in recent years. Gojo may not technically be the main character of the series, but for many, he's the primary draw.

Yet, despite his many advantages, key events from later in Jujutsu Kaisen's story indicated that his talent still needed proper honing to make him the powerhouse Special Grade sorcerer everybody knows and loves. It was more than the Limitless technique alone that granted him his godly mastery and confident aura. This is especially the case once Yuta Okkotsu famously took over Gojo's body in the final chapters of the series, realizing just how unwieldy Gojo's abilities truly were to those less experienced. It was a long road to the top for Gojo to be considered the greatest sorcerer of today, and it certainly didn't happen by accident.

Gojo Spent Years Training To Become The Strongest

Yuta Reading His Memories Proves How Hard He Worked

In a last-ditch effort to beat Sukuna, Yuta Okotsu took control of Gojo’s body by copying Kenjaku’s ability to transfer the user’s mind into a corpse. During the battle against the King of Curses, Gojo’s pupil was visibly struggling to emulate his teacher's techniques and fighting style. Yuta noticed that, despite inhabiting Gojo’s body, abilities like the Hollow Purple or his Domain Expansion were not as easy to conjure as Gojo made it seem. At one point in the battle, Okkotsu even ponders about how hard his teacher had to train to get to the level he was.

The series begins when Yuji Itadori swallows a cursed object — the finger of a legendary curse known as the King of Curses, the most powerful cursed spirit in history. Who is this ancient being?

AMahito BJogo CRyomen Sukuna DRika Orimoto

✓ Correct! Ryomen Sukuna is the King of Curses — an ancient, immensely powerful sorcerer from over a thousand years ago whose cursed essence was split into twenty indestructible fingers. When Yuji swallows one, Sukuna is reborn inside him, setting the entire story in motion.

✗ Cursed failure! The answer is Ryomen Sukuna. Mahito is a cursed spirit who manipulates souls, Jogo is a volcano-type curse, and Rika is the Queen of Curses from Jujutsu Kaisen 0. Only Sukuna holds the title of King of Curses.

The strongest jujutsu sorcerer alive is a blindfolded teacher at Tokyo Jujutsu High who possesses the legendary Six Eyes and the Limitless cursed technique. His birth alone shifted the balance of the jujutsu world. Who is he?

ASuguru Geto BSatoru Gojo CYuta Okkotsu DKento Nanami

✓ Correct! Satoru Gojo is the strongest sorcerer in the modern era, wielding the Six Eyes and Limitless technique that grants him Infinity — an ability that makes him virtually untouchable. His confident declaration “Throughout Heaven and Earth, I alone am the honored one” became iconic.

✗ Cursed failure! The answer is Satoru Gojo. Suguru Geto is his former best friend turned enemy, Yuta Okkotsu is a Special Grade sorcerer from JJK 0, and Kento Nanami is a Grade 1 sorcerer and former salaryman. Only Gojo holds the title of the strongest.

The pinnacle of jujutsu sorcery is a technique that creates a separate space with a guaranteed hit against anyone trapped inside. This ultimate ability is declared by name before activation. What is it called?

ADomain Expansion BBinding Vow CReverse Cursed Technique DBlack Flash

✓ Correct! Domain Expansion is the supreme technique in jujutsu — a sorcerer manifests their innate domain as a physical space where their attacks cannot miss. Gojo’s Unlimited Void, Sukuna’s Malevolent Shrine, and Mahito’s Self-Embodiment of Perfection are among the most devastating.

✗ Cursed failure! The answer is Domain Expansion. A Binding Vow is a contract that trades conditions for power, Reverse Cursed Technique converts cursed energy into healing, and Black Flash is a critical hit that applies cursed energy within 0.000001 seconds of a physical hit.

Early in the series, Yuji Itadori develops an unintentional fighting style where his cursed energy arrives a moment after his physical punch, creating a devastating double impact. What is this technique called?

ABlack Flash BCursed Strike CSoul Multiplicity DDivergent Fist

✓ Correct! Divergent Fist occurs because Yuji’s cursed energy is delayed behind his physical blow, creating two impacts in quick succession. While initially seen as a unique technique, it’s actually a sign of Yuji’s inexperience with cursed energy flow — he eventually learns to unify them properly.

✗ Cursed failure! The answer is Divergent Fist. Black Flash is a separate technique where cursed energy is applied within a fraction of a second of impact, creating a spatial distortion. Divergent Fist is Yuji’s signature early-series move caused by his lagging cursed energy.

A second-year student at Tokyo Jujutsu High possesses a hereditary cursed speech technique that imbues his words with cursed energy, forcing anyone who hears them to obey. To avoid accidentally cursing people, he only speaks using rice ball ingredients. Who is he?

AMaki Zenin BToge Inumaki CPanda DNoritoshi Kamo

✓ Correct! Toge Inumaki is the Inumaki clan descendant who wields Cursed Speech — his words become commands that others are forced to obey. He limits his vocabulary to onigiri ingredients like “salmon,” “tuna mayo,” and “kelp” to prevent accidentally harming people with his power.

✗ Cursed failure! The answer is Toge Inumaki. Maki Zenin has incredible physical prowess but limited cursed energy, Panda is a cursed corpse created by Principal Yaga, and Noritoshi Kamo uses Blood Manipulation. Only Inumaki speaks in rice ball ingredients to control his Cursed Speech.

Yuji, Megumi, and Nobara are first-year students at a school that trains jujutsu sorcerers to fight cursed spirits. This institution, where Gojo serves as a teacher, is located in Tokyo. What is it called?

ACursed Energy Academy BSorcerer Technical College CTokyo Jujutsu High DZenin Clan Dojo

✓ Correct! Tokyo Jujutsu High (Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College) is where sorcerers train to exorcise cursed spirits. It’s one of two jujutsu schools in Japan — the other being Kyoto Jujutsu High, led by Principal Gakuganji. Their annual Exchange Event is a major arc in the series.

✗ Cursed failure! The answer is Tokyo Jujutsu High. The Zenin clan is one of the three great sorcerer families but not a school. Tokyo Jujutsu High is the institution hidden behind a barrier where Gojo, Nanami, and other sorcerers guide the next generation.

Sukuna’s Domain Expansion is unique — instead of creating an enclosed barrier, it manifests as an open shrine with a guaranteed hit range of up to 200 meters. This makes it one of the most powerful domains ever seen. What is it called?

AMalevolent Shrine BUnlimited Void CChimera Shadow Garden DCoffin of the Iron Mountain

✓ Correct! Malevolent Shrine is Sukuna’s Domain Expansion — a Buddhist shrine adorned with skulls that delivers relentless slashing attacks. Unlike other domains, it has no barrier, which is considered a Binding Vow that massively increases its effective range and power.

✗ Cursed failure! The answer is Malevolent Shrine. Unlimited Void is Gojo’s domain that overwhelms targets with infinite information, Chimera Shadow Garden is Megumi’s domain, and Coffin of the Iron Mountain is Jogo’s volcanic domain. Sukuna’s barrierless Malevolent Shrine is considered the pinnacle.

Throughout the series, many characters have voiced their belief that Gojo’s strength comes mainly from his family’s techniques. While Limitless and Six Eyes are undoubtedly outstandingly powerful abilities, they do not seem to be the source of Gojo’s strength. During the beloved Hidden Inventory arc of the series, Gojo stated that he had trained daily to be able to master his techniques. While many individuals may dismiss Gojo as a nonchalant person who is naturally gifted, chapter 262-2 proves them wrong.

Jujutsu Kaisen Is A Series Where Hard Work Is Rewarded

The Fight Against Sukuna Proves That Natural Talent Is Not Enough

Yuji Black Flash on Sukuna

Jujutsu Kaisen is a series that has often depicted hard work as more valuable than natural ability. Characters like Maki or Toji, despite not having access to Cursed Energy, were able to fight hand-to-hand against some of the most powerful beings in the universe. Although being naturally gifted has also aided certain individuals in their quest to become the strongest, training and perseverance are treated with higher regard. The battle against Sukuna is the perfect example of how dedication trumps talent. Regardless of Sukuna’s status as the strongest sorcerer of his time, he has struggled while fighting against youngsters who have trained tirelessly.

Thanks to his intense training shortly before the battle against Sukuna began, Yuji has proven himself as one of the most versatile and strong individuals in the series. He has severely damaged his opponent, despite being constantly mocked for his weakness in the past. Yuta, who has often been regarded as a genius, had to relive his teacher's arduous training before effectively utilizing the Hollow Purple technique. While people born with talent have still been incredible allies during the fight, hard work is likely what will allow the heroes to defeat Sukuna once and for all.

Satoru Gojo is likely to remain one of the most powerful and beloved Jujutsu Kaisen characters. His awe-inspiring strength and impressive techniques make it hard for fans to forget how amazing a character he is. Nonetheless, the latest chapters ensure that followers of the series are aware of how important training was for Gojo to achieve the level he had before his death.

Gojo's Successor Took Decades To Reach His Level

Yuji Itadori in front of illustrations of Jujutsu Kaisen and Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo manga Custom Image by Vanessa Piña

Warning: Spoilers Ahead for Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo!

While it's utterly unsurprising that the original protagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen, a battle shonen series, would eventually match or surpass the story's breakout genius sorcerer, it still took until the recent sequel to happen. Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo brought a functionally immortal Yuji Itadori to the forefront after plenty of teases across its limited run. Demonstrating an array of techniques like Reverse Cursed Technique, Shrine, and Blood Manipulation, alongside attacks like others like Black Flash and Piercing Blood, Yuji's enormous proficiency and lack of worthy competitors put him essentially at the top of Jujutsu Kaisen's food chain.

But with 68 years to hone these abilities, Yuji also vastly outlived Gojo in the process, while potentially surpassing the limits of even Sukuna by the series' end. It leans into how Yuji progressively became more of a living cursed object by the end of Jujutsu Kaisen and going into its sequel. These qualities make the prospects of a Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo anime all the more enticing, especially with MAPPA's recent tantalizing anime trailer promoting the manga's final volume, as fans will have at least one more guaranteed chance to see Yuji animated following the big showdown with Sukuna in the main anime.
