The 2020s has been the era of TV for the Star Wars franchise. As theatrically released films have been absent from Lucasfilm and Disney’s slate, television series have dominated the franchise’s stories, beginning with The Mandalorian and then growing from there. The Mandalorian was well received by fans and critics, especially the first two seasons, but not every Star Wars series has gotten that kind of positive feedback.

Andor was the third Star Wars live action series that year, and received excellent reviews. Andor has since gone down as one of the best shows of the 21st century, such is the positive reception that the series has received. All of this is to say that the Star Wars franchise has put out a large number of shows, and reactions to these projects have been up and down.

One Star Wars show frequently gets overlooked in this era of TV. That show is Skeleton Crew, which debuted in 2024 and told a Goonies-esque story set in a galaxy far, far away. It didn’t feature the returning characters that The Mandalorian did, nor did it have the stakes of Andor or Obi-Wan Kenobi, but Skeleton Crew still managed to succeed greatly and is deserving of a second season, arguably more so than any other Star Wars series.

Skeleton Crew’s Original Story Excels

As stated, Skeleton Crew doesn’t focus on, or even feature, any pre-established characters (bar for a few pirate henchmen that appeared in The Mandalorian season 3). Instead, the story focuses on a group of young grade school-aged kids who live on the planet At-Attin, a hidden planet. The group unintentionally launches into the known galaxy, putting them in a desperate situation in which they must fight to return home.

The story ends up revolving around the planet of At-Attin, with the kids seeking out a map of the galaxy that will lead them back to their home world. It’s a relatively simple plot, but it works incredibly well, especially as it invokes the stories of famous films like the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and The Goonies. It feels like a treasure hunt show, one with pirates and dangers galore, but set in a galaxy far, far away.

All of this made Skeleton Crew truly unique in the Star Wars franchise. The movies especially always took inspiration from other stories, such as Kurosawa films, but rarely ventured so heavily into the story of pirates. As a result, Skeleton Crew stood out among the other shows releasing around the same time period, and in the best of ways.

The characters also helped greatly in this regard. Again, they are (for the most part) all original and new to this story, which helps in an era filled with prequel stories featuring main characters that audiences already know the fate of, such as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Andor. The fact that they’re kids also makes them unique, as even thougn someone like Grogu is still a child, he’s still very much behind the Skeleton Crew cast in terms of development.

There’s Plenty Of Room For A Sequel

Skeleton Crew left plenty of room for season two, too. The first season ended with At-Attin becoming discoverable to the rest of the galaxy, which moves the planet out of the shadows and into the mainstream. This will undoubtedly bring new threats to the world, but it will also help the residents feel less isolated from the rest of the galaxy.

Jude Law’s character, Jod Na Nawood, would be a huge part of a potential season two as well. Law played a conman of sorts, telling the kids that he was a Jedi before eventually revealing that the truth of his background is much more complicated. He’s not the hero the kids thought he was, and he turns against them in hopes to steal the planet’s treasure. He is ultimately unsuccessful, but Jod is redeemed just enough to leave his character open for further development.

In the end, Jod wasn’t all bad, despite the way in which he betrayed the kids. This means that there’s still plenty of story left for Skeleton Crew to tell, both for the kids as well as Jod himself. After all, Jude Law is a household name, so his presence alone would convince audiences to tune in to Disney+ every week, which may help convince Lucasfilm to keep Skeleton Crew going.

Season 2 Can Tie Into Other Shows In This Era

 Skeleton Crew (2024)

Season two of Skeleton Crew has the potential to act in a similar vein as The Mandalorian show. In the latter, season one was a largely isolated story that focused on Din Djarin and Grogu, whereas the second season broadened the scope to include characters like Luke Skywalker and Boba Fett. Season one was essentially a set-up for what’s to come, establishing the characters before pushing them into the wider galactic story.

Skeleton Crew had a very similar first season. The focus was on the characters more than anything else, just as the focus was on Din Djarin and Grogu. This allowed for the development of the likes of Jod, who felt like a three-dimensional, complex character. It’s that initial development that would allow Jod to go on to appear in another Star Wars series in the near future. Therefore, Jod (and the rest of the Skeleton Crew characters) can have a season two that ties into the rest of the galaxy.

The most recent story of this time period is The Mandalorian and Grogu, which premieres in theaters in a few weeks, so Skeleton Crew can potentially tie directly into the story of that film as well as the upcoming Ahsoka season 2. The latter is set to tell the broader story of this era, with Thrawn attempting to bring back the Empire, and now that At-Attin is tied with the New Republic, Skeleton Crew can be an important piece to that Star Wars story.
