The Joy Luck Club sequel is still happening per original cast member of the 1993 movie, Rosalind Chao.

“The girls are all having a quick zoom Tuesday night to discuss,” shared Chao on the Emmy Red Carpet tonight, “There’s a script.”

Deadline first told you about part 2 in October 2022, which will bring back novelist Amy Tan, Oscar-winning scribe Ron Bass as well as O.G. castmembers Ming-Na Wen, Tamlyn Tomita, Lisa Lu and, of course, Chao.

The Joy Luck Club tells the multigenerational saga of Chinese and Chinese-American mothers and daughters, whose histories, stories and lives interweave as they navigate life. Chao plays the daughter, Rose, in the movie. The original Disney Touchstone theatrical paved the way for such Asian-led movies as Crazy Rich Asians and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten RingsJoy Luck Club was executive produced by Oliver Stone and grossed close to $33M at the domestic box office.

In the sequel, the mothers become grandmothers and the daughters become mothers in their own right, introducing a new generation exploring their own relationships with culture, heritage, love, womanhood and identity.

“I cried when I read the script,” Chao told Deadline tonight.

Also producing Joy Luck Club 2 are Ashok Amritraj’s Hyde Park Entertainment Group and The Judge producer Jeff Kleeman.

Chao next stars in the sequel, Freakier Friday. She starred recently on the Netflix series 3 Body Problem.
