Joni Mitchell Makes Rare Red Carpet Appearance at Grammys 2026

Joni Mitchell didn’t need a big yellow taxi to get her to the 2026 Grammys.

But, indeed, the legendary singer-songwriter did arrive in style. Joni made a rare appearance on the red carpet at the Feb. 1 ceremony. The 82-year-old glittered in a pantsuit featuring gold, silver and black sequins in a gradient style. Keeping to her color scheme, she donned gold-rimmed glasses and a golden newsboy cap alongside a black cane, dark flats, and a black patterned shoulder bag. Though Joni hasn’t released new music in nearly two decades—not since her 2007 album Shine—she enters the Crypto.com Arena a nominee at the 2026 ceremony. After all, Joni is up for Best Historical Album for Joni Mitchell Archives - Vol. 4: The Asylum Years (1976-1980).

But stepping out at the Trevor Noah-hosted event caps off an eventful weekend for the “Both Sides Now” artist. After all, the evening before she joined Olivia Dean, Lana Del Rey and fellow music legend Frankie Valli at Clive Davis’ Annual Pre-Grammys party.

Though Joni has largely remained out of the spotlight in recent years amid her health battles, including her 2015 brain aneurysm, she’s made occasional outings. This includes returning to the stage at the 2022 Newport Folk Festival where she joined Brandi Carlile, Marcus Mumford and more for a 13-song set that included her hits “A Case of You” and “Big Yellow Taxi.”

Two years later, she made her Grammys performing debut at the 2024 ceremony, where she bought the house down with a star-studded showing of “Both Sides Now.”

But her show-stopping performances in recent years have been the product of her focusing on her recovery following her health scare. As she admitted to Cameron Crowe in a conversation for The Guardian in 2020, “Just inching my way along. I’m showing slow improvement but moving forward.”

After all, the healing process following her aneurysm required a lot of diligent focus as “I couldn’t walk,” she detailed. “I had to learn how again. I couldn’t talk.”

“Polio didn’t grab me like that, but the aneurysm took away a lot more, really,” she continued. “Took away my speech and my ability to walk. And, you know, I got my speech back quickly, but the walking I’m still struggling with. But I mean, I’m a fighter. I’ve got Irish blood! You know, I knew, ‘Here I go again, another battle.’”
